Martell Named
New Chairman
In Chemistry
Dr. Arthur E. Martell of the
Illinoiss Institute of Technology
has been appointed head of the
Department of Chemistry at Tex
as A&M President Earl Rudder
announced recently.
He replaces acting head Dr.
A. F. (Tex) Isbell, who is on a
year’s leave of absence for work
with a national committee study
ing more effective ways of teach
ing chemistry. Martell, on a lec
ture tour in Switzerland and
Russia, will not be on the campus
until October.
Martell, 49, who has also
chaired the Department of Chem
istry at Clark University, is a
veteran professor of 28 years ex-
perence.
The Natick, Mass., native re
ceived the bachelor degree at
Worcester Polytechnic in 1938
and the Ph.D. at New York Uni
versity in 1941. Martell became
an assistant at NYU after get
ting his doctorate, went to Clark
as an assistant professor in 1942
and moved up through the ranks
to chairman in 1959.
He was professor and chair
man at Illinois five years, taking
the post in 1961.
Recognized for his work on
metal chelate compounds, Martell
also specializes in amino acid
synthesis, ionic conductance in
nonaqueous solvents and potenti-
ometry of aqueos solutions.
Dickey To Join
A&M Staffers
In Dominican
James R. Dickey will join the
Texas A&M staff in the Domi
nican Republic, Dr. M. T. Har
rington, co-ordinator in Inter
national programs, has an
nounced.
He resigned as livestock in
spector with the Texas Power &
Light Company in Dallas to ac
cept the overseas position. Dickey
has been assigned as regional
agricultural development at San
tiago in the central section of
the Carabbean Island Republic.
He will advise the Ministry of
Agriculture’s regional director.
Accompanied by his wife and
three children, Dickey left last
weekend for his new duties. The
parents have just completed a
six-week orientation program and
refresher training in the Spanish
language.
This will he the second over
seas tour for the Dickeys. They
resided 18 months at Sao Paulo,
Brazil, where he was an advisor
to cattle breeders. Previously,
Dickey was with the Interna
tional Santa Getrudis Breeders
Association, traveling over the
United States and Latin America
classifying cattle.
Dickey holds Texas A&M
bachelor’s and masters degrees
in animal science. Graduate of
Bay City High School, he is the
son of Mrs. Doyle A. Bridges of
Bay City.
Dr. Jarvis E. Miller heads Tex
as A&M’s 34-member staff in the
Dominican Republic. The group
operates under a contract be
tween the University and State
Department’s Agency for Inter
national Development, advising
the Dominican government in ag
ricultural development.
