Wall Joins Utility Program SWITCHBOARD STARS Marge George, left, and Sharon Biehle, switchboard opera tors at Texas A&M’s Memorial Student Center, are walking encyclopedias. Callers expect them to know virtually every thing. If they don’t know, the dandy duo usually finds some one who does. “What time is it in Hawaii?” “What kind of wax do you use on the floor of this building?” “Are there any seats left for the football game?” These are samples of hundreds of questions fired at Texas A&M’s Memorial Student Center switch board operators every day. One operator was startled late at night when a man called from afar asking if she could hum the Aggie War Hymn. She tried humming and whistling it, but eventually hunted up a student to fill the request. A&M has no campus switch board, but since the MSC is known as “the living room of the campus,” many general calls are routed to that switchboard. The board has only eight lines and the pace is hectic since the MSC has 50 extensions in additon to phones in 65 rooms. International visitors to the campus pose stern problems for switchboard operators. Ballet Folklorico was here, the performers kept the telephone lines humming,” Marge George explained. “Luckily, we had bell man John Conejo available. He manned the switchboard and we filled in for him at the desk.” All the switchboard operators are trained to fill each other’s positions. Mrs. Nan M. Holland, guest rooms supervisor, recalls an amusing incident during, the Christmas holidays when the MSC was officially closed. “Director Wayne Stark noticed several lights on the switchboard and summoned a student to han dle the calls. Paul Bleau of Lynn, Mass., called Mrs. Holland for in structions to operate the board. “Paul told me I sounded like I was way off in a barrel,” Mrs. Holland chuckled. “I told him to check all the keys and make sure the buzzer was turned on, but he still couldn’t hear me. We started again, then he began to laugh. Paul discovered he had been talk ing through the earpiece.” ‘When the Mexican troupe of Sharon Biehle and John Ash- BATTALION CLASSIFIED WANT AD RATES 0m ter i4 P«r ward I# par ward aach addltianal day Minimum chare*—tty DEADLINE 4 p.aa. day bafara publlcatlan Claaaifiad DUplay • •a par yalamn inch aach inaartion CHILD CARE nlthad. ear*. 846-81E Baby food fur* 267tfn Oracory’a Day Nuraaiy—846-4008. They need to know scores of ball games, start ing times for movies and com munity events, and other tidbits to satisfy callers. Operators usually ask callers to hold the line a moment when a conversation is in progress on the extension being called. Subbing as a desk clerk, an operator noticed the board flash ing, and in a hurried voice to the guest at the desk, asked: “Would you hold the line a moment, please?” CHARLES WALL Charles Wall Jr., an employe of the City of Pharr for the past four years, has joined the water utility training program of Texas A&M’s Engineering Extension Service.
