Koufax Faces Astros Friday In Astrodome

College Football
Continues Growth
By HAROLD V. RATLIFF
Associated Press Sports Writer
Texas will have as much col
lege football this season as last
although one that played in 1966
has discontinued the sport.
University of Corpus Christi
will be without football this fall.
But Paul Quinn, the Negro
college at Waco, is resuming
football this year. And that’s
the same number — 40 — that
was in it last season.
Heading the list, of course, will
be the Southwest Conference’s
seven Texas members. No other
state has seven members of a sin
gle major conference, in fact no
other state has as many major
colleges in football.
There are 11 in Texas, count
ing Houston, Texas Western,
West Texas State and North
Texas State, in addition to the
seven members of the Southwest
Conference.
Here’s how the colleges will
line up this fall:

Expansion Drive
Reaches $300,000
Texas A&M’s New Kyle Field
Drive reached the $300,000 pla
teau this week, announced Bob
Hunt, Steering Committee execu
tive secretary.
Donation-option pledges total
$300,000 through the first two
months of a campaign to provide
the Aggies with “one of the finest
football stadiums in the South
west Conference.”
A short-range goal of $100,000
is set for August.
Hunt said a $900 reservation
order from the Houston A&M
Club pushed the drive over the
$300,000 mark, with Midland,
Odessa and Amarillo among the
big leaders.
L. F. Peterson, A&M board
member and Fort Worth oil oper
ator, revealed earlier that once
the $760,000 from donation-seat
options is reached, matching
funds will be provided through
revenue bonds.

College football in Texas be
came more stable when the
Southland Conference was formed
so some of the schools that had
been playing independently could
get to play for something. Teams
in conferences seldom quit.
McMurry entered the Lone
Star Conference last year but
had to wait until this season to
be in the football championship
race.
Texas will have football aplen
ty in 1966 since there are two
professional teams — Houston
and Dallas.

Sandy Koufax will pitch Fri

between the surging Los Angeles
Dodgers and the Astros.

Braves. They’ll also play the
Cincinnati Reds, St. Louis Cardi

games of this homestand for the
Astros.
The Astros’ pitching ace, Dave
Giusti (11-8), will face Koufax
on Friday, with Bob Bruce and
Chris Zachary to pitch Saturday
and Sunday, respectively.
Koufax, the winningest pitcher
in the majors this year and al
most already in the Hall of Fame,
will be making his fourth start
against Houston. He won his
last game against the Astros last
June 22, but the Astros beat him
June 14, and forced him out after
three innings on April 13, al
though Koufax didn’t get the
loss.
Sandy has a 12-2 career record
against Houston and hadn’t lost
to Houston since April, 1962, un
til last June 14.
These games will be all-impor
tant to the Dodgers who are
fighting for the pennant with the
San Francisco Giants and Pitts
burgh Pirates. And the Astros
have a 7-4 series edge over the
Dodgers this season.
MATSON MARRIES
Mrs. Margaret Burns Matson looks up at her world shot

Saturday night. Randy and Margaret had dated since their
high school days at Pampa. Mrs. Matson is a graduate of
Abilene Christian College while Randy will be entering his
junior year at Texas A&M this fall. Matson holds the shot
put record with a toss of 70 feet, 7% inches. (AP Wire-
