The acting head of A&M’s De
partment of Meteorology is one
of three members held over from
the old board. Announcement of
the appointment was made by
American Meteorological Society
vice president, Werner A. Baum,
commissioner of education and
manpower.
Changes in AMS committee
composition aimed for revitaliza
tion, fixing of terms and balance
between continuity and rotation.
Moyer’s membership term ex
pires June 30, 1969, though his
chairmanship term is open-ended.
His responsibilities include dis
semination of meteorological edu
cation through primary and sec
ondary schools, to give people
information necessary for them
to take advantage of daily
weather forecasts. Earth-science
curriculums are expected to serve
as a vehicle, Moyer notes.
Texas is one of three states
with earth-science curriculums
including instruction for junior
high age and up students in
oceanography, geology, meteor
ology and astronomy.
“We’ve got to take folklore out
of meteorology and science,”
Moyer vowed, “and the only
place to do it is at the secondary
school level.”
The A&M atmospheric scientist
will serve on the board with Dr.
Chester W. Newton, National
Center for Atmospheric Research
scientist, Boulder, Colo.; A. C.
Wiin-Nielsen, Meteorology and
Oceanography Department head,
Michigan University; Kenneth
Jehn, associate professor of
meteorology, University of Tex
as; Francis K. Davis, physics de
partment head, Drexel Institute
of Technology, and Glenn E.
Stout, meteorologic lab head,
Illinois State Water Survey,
University of Illinois.
Baptists Lead
YMCA Head Says
Almost one-fourth of Texas
A&M’s summer school enrollment
is Baptist, a denominational
preference list shows.
YMCA General Secretary J.
Gordon Gay released figures that
1,074 of 4,827 summer students
are Baptist or attend the Baptist
church. IViethodist and Catholic
were dominant in the report.
A&M students prefer 24 differ
ent faiths, 54 falling into a mis
cellaneous category and 550 giv
ing no preference.
Gay’s figures listed 959 Meth
odists and 737 Catholics. Promi
nent among the 24 faiths listed
(in order) are Presbyterian,
Episcopal, Lutheran, Church of
Christ, Protestant, Moslem and
Christian.

A single urbanized area and a
single political unit for Bryan
and College Station are long-
range recommendations of a
graduate class in urban and
regional planning at Texas A&M.
The two-year study projects
changes proposed for accomplish
ment by 1985.
Among other things, the study
calls for dramatic changes in
policy for a future relatively free
of problems.
“This will necessitate produc
tive thinking of public officials
and the general public,” com
mented Professor Joseph Mc-
Graw, director of urban and
regional planning for A&M’s
School of Architecture. “Growth
can be an opportunity if you ac
cept it in that light. We are not
interested in solving growth prob
lems on a day-to-day basis.”
“The study gives our students
a rare opportunity of political
jurisdiction of Bryan-College Sta
tion, Brazos County and the uni
versity,” he continued. “Our stu
dents are able to probe live prob
lems ... to become more aware
of the reality of the world around
them.”
Projection calls for a single
community of 100,000 population,
16 additional elementary schools,
two junior high schools, and a
new high school.
McGraw says the study is being
supported entirely by the nine
students in the class.
The student study favors a
western expressway for Bryan-
College Station. McGraw said
expressway is a better descrip
tion than bypass or loop since it
is to be a terminus of origin of
activity.
Pointed out as traffic genera
tors for a western expressway
are expansion of Easterwood Air
port facilities for jet service, ex
pansion of the A&M Research
Annex, and expansion of indus
trial areas.
“All these will need a high
level, limited access facility to
provide for growth,” McGraw
noted.
Documentation of the students’
projections were made from exist
ing engineering studies, primarily
those by Homer Hunter and
Associates which indicate resi
dential growth in the east and
south sections of the twin cities
in the next two decades.
McGraw emphasized that the
urban and regional planning stu
dents are available to speak to
civic groups and other community
organizations. Interested groups
may arrange for speakers by
calling the secretary at the A&M
School of Architecture.
“These students have varied
undergraduate backgrounds, in
cluding economics, political sci
ence, psychology, architecture and
design, and civil engineering,”
McGraw stressed. “Several are
nearing completion of master’s
programs.”
