Vet Conclave
Attracts Top
Speakers
Speakers from California, Ala
bama and the U. S. Air Force are
among the top attractions during
the 19th annual Texas Confer
ence for Veterinarians which runs
through Saturday at Texas A&M.
They are Major Jerry Fineg,
chief of the Bio Effects Division,
Holloman AFB, New Mexico, who
will talk on sub-primate care and
handling; Dr. W. D. Ommert of
Monrovia, Calif., whose topic is
horse practice; and Dr. Carl H.
Clark of Alabama’s Auburn Uni
versity, who will discuss small
animal laboratory diagnoses and
diagnostic aids.
Fineg’s presentation describes
care of animals used in the na
tion’s space program. His talk
will be illustrated with a sound
film.
Dr. R. D. Turk of the A&M
College of Veterinary Medicine,
program chairman, said about 250
persons are attending the confer
ence in the Memorial Student
Center. The program marks the
50th anniversary of the College
of Veterinary Medicine.
The conference also honors the
surviving members of the 13
young men who enrolled in vet
erinary medicine when the col
lege first opened in 1916. They
are Dr. R. H. Harrison Jr., of
Bryan, Dr. R. R. Childers of Jas
per, and Dr. Archie Stallings of
Montgomery.
Dr. M. T. Harrington, A&M’s
coordinator of International Pro
grams, will speak on the history
of the College of Veterinary Med
icine during a smorgasbord din
ner at 6:45 p.m. Friday. Har
rington is past president of A&M
and former chancellor of the
A&M System.
Another function of the confer
ence, Turk said, is to hold A&M
veterinary alumni reunions. The
classes this year are of 1926, 1936,
1946 and 1956.
Overall activities start at 7:30
p.m. tonight with a reception and
coffee. Talks begin at 9:30 a.m.
Friday with an address of wel
come by Dr. A. A. Price, dean of
the College of Veterinary Medi
cine.
Subjects to be discussed on the
second day, in addition to the
talk by Clark, are large animal
problems by Dr. Donald Walker
of Auburn University; exotic dis
eases, Dr. K. L. Kuttler; small
animal problems, Dr. G. M. Cow
ing; and the precipitin test and
infectious anemia, Dr. H. E. Red
mond, all of A&M..
Fineg and Ommert will give
their talks Saturday. They will
be preceded by Dr. King S. Gib
son, Houston practitioner, who
will outline a survey of canine
tumors.
Conference members will shift
to the Veterinary Hospital that
afternoon for closed television
demonstrations on large and
small animal procedures.
