THE BATTALION Page 4 College Station, Texas Thursday, May 26, 1966 Athletic Complex Adds Net Courts Completion of Texas A&M’s $33,000 varsity tennis courts within the month will add a su perior feature to the university’s fast-growing athletic facilities complex. Four Laykold surface courts are under construction south of Kyle Field. The varsity courts will round out a complex of two gymna siums, modern outdoor Olympic and heated indoor swimming pools, football stadium due ex pansion after the 1966 season and 20 concrete intramural tennis courts. New courts, described as “a happy medium between concrete and clay, are a step forward for our program,” declared tennis coach Omar Smith. “The facility will be as fine as any university’s. It will help play and recruiting.” A&M OFFICIALS expect con struction to be completed before the Texas Tennis Camp, annually held at A&M. The red-separated green play ing surfaces will be of an asphalt composition, noted A&M con struction engineer Charley Leighton. Laykold surface will be poured on subwork of six inches of crushed stone and six inches of lime-stabilized base. Laykold is employed on courts at Trinity, Texas and Rice Univer sities. The playing area will be en closed by a 10-foot heavy gauge chain link fence supported on three-inch steel posts. “With a solid material wind break, the fence will stand 60 mph winds,” Leighton said. TREES ON THE east, south and west side of the facility form a natural wind break. Stands, to be constructed, will be under south side trees, placing specta tors for end-on viewing of four matches at a time with their backs to the sun. Smith expects A&M net play to be better with the new standard surface. “We only lost one home match in 1966,” Smith pointed out. “It was on wood in White Coliseum. The Oklahoma match had to be moved because of bad weather. We’ll be playing on the same sur face on away and home courts now.” SENIOR NET veteran Luis Rojas of Costa Rica figures the Aggies will be able to maintain an advantage. Aggies Sign 7 Trackmen Coach Charley Thomas of Tex as A&M has signed seven boys for his track team, including two national junior college champions from Blinn. Jack Abott won the high hur dles in last week’s national JC meet, and Jack White won the open quarter. Other Aggie signees are sprint- er-quartermiler Jerry Roundtree of Goldthwaite, discus thrower Mark Bindock of Leakey, broad jumper A1 Coroy of South Hous ton, hurdler David Fritsche of La Grange and quartermiler David Dolton of Yoakum. A Baseball First: Catcher Hogs Play INDIANA, Pa. UP) _ Indiana State University may have rec orded a baseball first Monday in a game against St. Francis College. Indiana’s catcher made all three putouts in a triple play. That may have happened be fore. But he also had an error on the play. Here’s how it happened: With runners on first and third, the St. Francis batter struck out on a hit-and-run play. One out. Indiana catcher Rick Dahlgren threw to second baseman Jerry Dolges, whose relay to home caught the runner breaking from third. Two out. As the other runner continued going, Dahl gren attempted to throw him out at third, but overthrew into left field for an error. But the return throw from left-fielder Nick Sud- zina got the third out at the plate. Indiana went on to win the game 4-1 for its 13th consecu tive victory.
