The associate research engi
neer for the Cottonsee d Products
Research Laboratory will discuss
“Aeration” at the Biloxi, Miss,
seminar.
East Berlin in connection with
an 8-country research project
supported by the National Science
Foundation.
Professor W. B. Davis said
Carter is searching for informa
tion on types of Latin American
bats. Davis said the research
will aid in finding valid names
for types of bats. Several inde
pendent researchers, he ex
plained, have collected Latin
American bats and given names
to the species. The result is
several names for a single species.
Other stops are scheduled in
Germany, England, Denmark,
Belgium, France, Holland, Spain
and Sweden.
The study is being made as a
portion of a three-year $35,000
NSF grant.
Couple Combine
Grades, Marriage
Scholarship and housekeeping
are homogenous at Texas A&M,
where married life and studying
is a combination on the increase.
Tommy and Martha Casbeer of
Lampasas, agricultural economics
graduate and education major,
respectively, are typical.
Tom is finishing his first year
on a master’s degree, requiring
2.25 grade point ratio work.
Martha graduates with honors
Saturday, posting an overall 2.6
GPR. She is one of six liberal
arts students to receive Faculty
Achievement awards.
A close schedule and only occa
sional entertainment break the
routine in the Casbeer household.
Tom and Martha leave their Col
lege View apartment at 7:30 a.m.
and return at 5:30 for supper
and relaxation. Studying begins
at 8 .
WEEKENDS ARE devoted to
chores or Lampasas trips and
looking after one cow left from
Tommy’s high school ranching.
Football and dance weekends turn
the Casbeer’s home into a casbah,
with Martha’s friends from a
year at Baylor making the apart
ment headquarters.
He has worked as a rancher,
fence builder, range fire fighter
and part-time this year. He goes
on a research assistantship in
June, and not too soon.
Funds from sale of 100 sheep,
some cows and land are almost
gone. They planed for four years,
but made it in three by crowding-
in a year’s work in summer
school.
“MARTHA IS consistent with
2.5 GPRs,” Tommy remarked.
“She’s really great. The way
she’^ fed and taken care of me
so I can study and makes her
grades proves it.”
She has never posted less than
2.5. His worst semester was a
1.3 freshman spring semester.
They married that summer, and
his grades rebounded.
The trend holds among the
married 30 per cent of A&M’s
enrollment, according to Bennie
Zinn, student affairs director.
“Surveys show married stu
dents have higher GPRs than
others,” he noted.
Housework is simple, according
to Tommy.
“I DRY DISHES,” he said.
Martha does chores on weekends,
often taking ironing to Lampasas.
She spends 15 minutes each
morning picking up.
“I hate to come in to a mess,”
she offered. Studying adjusts
itself. She works at the dining
table or living room floor in front
of the TV. Tommy is shut in a
back room because he likes quiet.
Their A&M future was fore
seen. Martha, salutatorian in
their high school class of 104,
was predicted to be “the first girl
to gx-aduate from A&M.”
“TOMMY AND I started ‘go
ing steady’ our high school sopho
more year. Everyone knew he
was coming to A&M,” Martha
explained.
Tommy’s father, a 1937 A&M
graduate, and an uncle, class of
’43, helped.
“Dad rocked me to sleep often,”
Tom recalled, “and he knew only
three songs, ‘The Spirit of Aggje-
land,’ ‘War Hymn,’ and ‘The 12th
Man’.”
