A $110,000 National Science
Foundation grant to increase the
Nuclear Science Center machine’s
power tenfold has been an
nounced by President Earl Rud
der.
The grant funds the second
phase of stepping power from 100
kilowatts to 1,000, noted NSC
director Dr. John D. Randall.
Phase I, pool modifications and
stainless steel lining, has been
completed. Phase II, installation
of cooling equipment in a separ
ate building, should be completed
by next summer if work begins
Jan. 1, Randall said.
“At 1,000 kilowatts, the reactor
generates enough heat to service
a small city,” Dr. Randall re
marked.
The new facility will be design
ed by the NSC staff under project
engineer Donald E. Feltz, assist
ant director. The NSF grant also
covers equipment — pumps, pip
ing, cooling tower, heat exchang
ers, control system and building
accomplished on a weekend when
the reactor is idle, Randall indi
cated.
A dozen campus agencies and
departments and 10 other univer
sities use the reactor, located
south of Easterwood Field. It
has been in operation since 1962.
“The new 1,000 kilowatt power
level will make it possible for us
to do things faster and more in
expensively, or things not now
even possible,” Dr. Randall com
mented.
