A HAPPY CRAIN
Billy Crain, who stopped a Texas rally in the ninth inning
Tuesday, discusses the Aggies’ 8-6, win over the Longhorns
which gave A&M at least a share of the Southwest Con
ference baseball title.
Russell Top Draft
Prospect In NBA
NEW YORK 6S 5 ) — Cazzie Rus
sell, Michigan’s 6-foot-5, 218-
pound All-America, is expected to
be the No. 1 pick by the New
York Knickerbockers Wednesday
in the annual player draft of
the National Basketball Associa
tion.
New York won the coin flip
with the Detroit Pistons for the
right to make the first selection
after the two teams finished last
in the two divisions. Detroit will
get second pick and probably will
take Dave Bing, the 6-3, All-
America from Syracuse, a fine
all-around performer who scored
794 points.
Dave Schellhase, another All-
America star from Purdue who
led the nation’s major colleges
in scoring with a 32.5-point aver
age, also is due to be taken high
in the first round.
The new Chicago Bulls, who
will operate as the 10th team in
the league in the 1966-67 season,
will have to wait until 10th and
last in the first round. However,
the new entry, coached by John
Kerr, will get the third and
fourth picks in the second round.
The order of selection in the
draft scheduled for 12 noon EDT
will be New York, Detroit, San
Francisco, St. Louis, Baltimore,
Cincinnati, Los Angeles, Boston,
Philadelphia and Chicago. In the
second round Detroit moves up to
No. 1.
After two rounds, president
Walter Kennedy will call a short
recess. Then they will continue
as long as the supply lasts.
Bill Bradley of Princeton was
the first pick last year. He went
to the Knicks but passed up pro
ball to continue his studies. Brad
ley, Bill Buntin of Michigan De
troit and Gail Goodrich of UCLA
Los Angeles were the first men
taken last year as territorial se
lections, a category that has been
eliminated.
One potential draftee, Henry
Finkel, 6-11, 240-pounder from
Dayton, already has been selected
twice—by Los Angeles and Cin
cinnati. Because he went back to
school, he is in the hopper again.
Clyde Lee of Vanderbilt, a 6-9,
220-pound giant, has said he
plans to play in Italy but he
probably will be picked by some
club.
The Knicks refuse to admit
that they will take Rusell but
they have commented, “We will
take the best college player avail
able.” Most observers think Rus
sell is the man.
Russell scored 800 points, aver
aging 30.8, last season, led the
Big Ten in scoring, was named
most valuable player in the East-
West game and most valuable
player in the AAU tournament.
An ankle injury kept him off the
1964 Olympic team.

Scale Wins Judo Laurels
Don Scafe of Ridgetown, On
tario, has “Wazari-ed” his way to
the championship of Texas A&M
Judo Club matches.
The judo tourney, A&M’s first
this, year and planned monthly in
the future, was held in G. Rollie
White Coliseum.
Tommy Erwin of Waco and
Scafe won preliminary matches
with “holddowns,” pinning op*
ponents’ backs to the mat for 30
seconds. Scafe defeated Erwin
with a Wazari (throw, worth
half a point) after each had
scored by that method.
The first man to score a point
in judo wins the match.
In other matches Saturday, Dr.
W. George Blanton, black belt
and club instructor, won over Jim
Culpepper with a choke and Cul
pepper bested J. Blasdel by de
fault. Scafe and Culpepper, of
Fort Valley, Ga., wear brown
belts. Erwin wears green.
The judo club meets at 5 p.m.
in Room 253 of the Coliseum,
Scafe announced. He invited in
terested students and faculty
members to attend.
