Page 4 THE BATTALION College Station, Texas Tuesday, May 10, 1966 Aggies Finish Third ‘I Sold All My Old Textbooks At SHAFFER’S Texas Wins SWC Track Title A one-two-three sweep by Tex as in the three-mile run, plus a surprise first on the 120 hurdles by Steve Sanson, gave the Long horns the Southwest Conference track and field title this weekend. Rice finished second and Texas A&M third. Richard Romo, Ken Sunder land and Brian Woolsey gave Texas the sweep in the three miles. Romo’s 14:32.0 was a con ference record and went along with his 4:05.9 in the mile to com plete a distance events double. A&M’s Randy Matson and Gil bert Smith also scored doubles in their specialties. Matson threw the discus 197-11 and the shot 66-9 3/4 while Smith won the 100 in 9.6 and the 220 in 21.0, for his season’s best. Other first place winners were SMU in the, 440 relay with 40.4, Jim Bankhead of SMU in the 440 run with 46.6, Preston Davis of Texas in the 880 run with 1:49.9, Mike Schrider of A&M in the high jump with 6-4, Mark King of Texas in the pole vault with 15-6, Tom Moore of Rice in the 440 hurdles with 52.5, Mike Madi- gan of SMU in the broad jump with 23-2 1/4, Rick Jacobs of Rice in the javelin with 224-10%, and Rice in the mile relay with 3:08.5. Bankhead won individual high point honors with 12% points. He won the 440 and finished second in the 220 and ran a leg on the winning 440 relay. Rice won the freshman mile relay and edged Texas — 66- 65 — in the frosh division. The Owlets made the tour in 3:09.7, almost as fast as their big broth ers, to completely demolish the mark of 3:15.5 by Baylor in 1960. Matson, Smith To Participate In Two West Coast Meets The Aggies led after 13 events with 44 points to 43 for Rice, the defending champion, and 42 for Texas, but the Longhorns’ one-two-three finish in the three mile run and a fourth in the mile relay pushed them to the champ ionship. Texas A&M’s two doubles win ners in the recent Southwest Con ference meet—weightman Randy Matson and sprinter Gilbert Smith—will compete in two West Coasts meets this coming week end. the 100 and 220 in the SWC meet. A&M coach Charlie Thomas also announced that Matson and Smith were the only Aggies who would compete in the NCAA meet at Bloomington, Ind., in June.
