Aggies Face Challenge
In SWC Track Meet
Coach Charles Thomas and his
Texas Aggie track congregation
will participate in their biggest
meet of the year Friday and
Saturday—the Southwest Confer
ence meet in Austin.
SWC athletes—both freshman
and varsity—will be participat
ing at the same time the Uni
versity Interscholastic League
schoolboy track meet is being
held.
A&M, led by world champion
shot putter Randy Matson, is one
of the four teams which could
sweep to the title in the varsity
division. Texas, Rice and South
ern Methodist are the other likely
candidates, with Texas the odds-
on favorite because of their per
formances in the last two meets.
Texas is heavily favored in the
freshman division.
Emil Mamaligia, A&M’s weight
training coach, said Tuesday
Matson is getting his weight
back and should weigh around
250 for the meet, some 10 pounds
lighter than when he pushed the
shot 70-714 last year.
“The only thing that could keep
him back from a good toss is his
legs are still a little small because
of the lack of weight he can do
squat with,” Mamaligia said.
Thomas has been pleased with
the Aggie performances lately
and figures that wtih a few
breaks, the Aggies could surprise.
“Even though we did not fare
so good at the Drake Relays last
week, I think that we have a
potential to score more than 50
points,” Thomas said.
Last year Rice took the title
with 60 points and the Aggies
closed second with 52.
