The Aggies are currently ranked as the No. 2 team in the nation. TCU’s weekend series proved one thing. You cannot win a ball game with press clippings. The Aggies lacked everything good they have showed all sea son long. They did not get the clutch hitting. The pitching - was erratic. The fielding was worse. As it turned out, TCU won the first game, 10-6, and the second, 5- 3. A&M is now in third place in the conference with a 6-4-1 record compared to Texas’ 7-4 and TCU’s 7-3-1. A&M has four games remaining — two with Baylor and two with Texas. They must win all of them to remain in contention for the title. But it wasn’t a bad weekend for all. The Aggie netters can vouch for that. Coach Omar Smith’s netters brushed a good Baylor team, 6- 0, to take a giant step toward the first SWC net title in the school’s history. A&M will go to Rice Tuesday and will need only a 3-3 split with the Owls to take the title. The Aggies are now 29-1 for the season. The victory was the 11th in a row for the Aggies and their fifth consecutive shutout. Their overall record now stands at 16-5. With the exception of the No. 3 singles, the Aggies won every match in straight sets and only one set went overtime. In the football scrimmage held Saturday, coach Gen Stallings said there was a big improve ment in the defensive play over Wednesday’s scrimmage and add ed that the offense improved some. The Maroons beat the White, 24-0, as Lloyd Curington scored two touchdowns and Ken Caffey and Ronnie Lindsey added an other apiece. The scrimmage was the second. of the spring drills and seventh workout for the Aggies. Harry Ledbetter directed the first touchdown drive while sophomores Ed Hargett and Charlie Riggs guided the others. Hargett quarterbacked the mid dle two. “We’re a long way from being a good football team because we don’t have enough players who know what it takes to be good players. We’re working to ward that, though,” Stallings said. The Aggies will hold their eighth workout of the spring at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the practice field behind Kyle Field. The track meet which A&M entered at Lubbock was rained out. Waxahachie’s Harvey Huff stetler, 6-7 all-state center, was signed Saturday by Texas Ag gie coach Shelby Metcalf to a pre-enrollment application to at tend A&M on a basketball schol arship. Huffstetler hit on 81 per cent of his free throws and 68 per cent of his field goals attempts last year when he led his team to a 26-5 record. As a junior Huff stetler led the team to the finals of the state tournament. “We are thrilled to get Har vey,” Metcalf said. “He was our number one choice in the state. He’s a big boy who can jump and shoot and who can play either in side or out.” The three-time all-district per former, twice unanimous choice, averaged 29 points per game last season. Because of his outstand ing play, he has been picked to play in the all-star basketball game this summer at the state coaching school. Huffstetler is slender at 180 pounds for his 6-7 frame, but Metcalf believes “he will put on some weight, and he’s through growing yet. He rri add another couple of inches,' Huffstetler is currently 1 ting .447 as a shortstop on Waxahachie baseball team «i is leading the district. He pi to play both sports at A&M Aggie baseball coach Tom On ler indicated that Huffstel should be tried out at first k Huffstetler is also an all-sti in baseball. FOUNTAIN R001 M.S.C.
