After Scrimmage Session
4 Kids Were Trying’—Stallings
By GERALD GARCIA
Battalion Sports Editor
The kids were trying and that
is the important thing, but we are
still a long way from Georgia
Tech, commented Texas A&M
head football coach Gene Stall
ings after the Aggies completed
their first scrimmage of the
spring drills Thursday.
Stallings said the Aggies,
which play Tech for their first
game in the fall, had a long way
to go but that he could not really
tell until the coaching staff re
views films of the scrimmage.
The scrimmage, held in chilly
weather in Kyle Field, saw the
first offensive unit score two
touchdowns on consecutive 80-
yard drives against the second
defensive squad, whole the first
defensive unit held the second
team offense scoreless.
“Offensively we stopped our
selves,” Stallings said. “We would
start a drive and miss an assign
ment, leave a block too soon or
drop a pass.”
Stallings plans to send the
Aggies through the second scrim
mage of spring drills Saturday.
Saturday’s drill will start at 3
p.m. and the scrimmage will be
gin about 3:40.
Running the first offensive team
was Harry Ledbetter, last year’s
No. 1 quarterback. Ledbetter
directed both drives, climaxing
the first with a four-yard run
by Bill Sallee. Ledbetter scored
the points after on a sneak.
Others on the first offensive
team were Tommy Maxwell and
George Walker, split end; Donald
Koehn and Maurice Moorman,
tackle; Gary Kovac and Jack
Pyburn, guards; Jim Singleton,
center; Ed Breding and Mark
Weaver, tight ends; Wendell
Housley, and Lloyd Curington,
wing back; Dan Schneider and
Glenn Lindsey, fullback; and
Sallee and Ken Caffey, tailback.
