Prof Discusses
Russian Fishing
The United States should not
censure Russian fishing off the
coast of Oregon; a Texas A&M
oceanographer has contended.
American trawler captains
have accused a fleet of Russian
vessels of improper fishing. They
claim the Russians are removing
300,000 pounds of perch, sole and
halibut a day from international
waters. Fishermen operating out
of Newport, Ore., claim the So
viets are taking immature fish.
“We can’t criticize the Russians
too much for something some of
our fishing folk have done,” said
Dr. Willis E. Pequegnat, head of
A&M’s Department of Ocean
ography.
“But this is like Arctic whaling.
The Japanese and Russians don’t
worry about decimation of whale
herds in that area,” he said.
THE BATTALION
“Fish sources are not inex
haustible,” Pequegnat warned.
“Indiscriminate trawling such as
this could severely handicap fish
ing in the area for two or three
years.”
He pointed out that Russia is
one of several countries that re
fuse to recognize pacts such as
the International Halibut Com
mission, an international agree
ment to restrict and protect hali
but supply.
