BAILEY Beaumont A&M Mother’s Club 1965 When I was first an Aggie Mom—’way back in ’52 I packed my little cherub’s things and shed a tear or two And all this time I wondered why he was so aglow And I, his poor Mother, was feeling Oh! so low! Then off they went to Aggie land, one happy as the other— “Don’t fret, my pet” his father says, “you still have little broth er.” When we arrived at half-past ten in front of Walton Hall I gasped when he came walking out—for he looked ten feet tall! Was it the crisp creased Khaki or the brightly shining brass— Or was it another milestone that I myself had passed? For my once tow-headed boy had really grown up fast— And now, I must admit he was a man at last! I never heard such giggles when he removed his hat— They came from little brother from over where he sat. I gasped myself, I tell you, I really was appalled, For they’d cut his hair so short that he was almost bald! Yes, things were quite exciting when my son was just a Fish For he made Phi Eta Sigma and the Dean’s distingiushed list! And, by mid-term his Sopho more year, he’d added another star— And that was when his Dad agreed that he could have a car! By the time he was a Junior, he’d met and pinned a pretty lass And I knew with this extra curricular, he’d not wind up head of his class! For if I wasn’t going there—I was coming from! My funniest experience was when I got calls from eight— They wondered since I was coming if I could bring their dates! Though I never had a daugh ter, young girls I just adore— I had them on the seats and even on the floor. We had planned to meet the boys on the campus at North Gate And I felt a little worried, for I could see that we were late And the girls would have to dress—for the dance began at eight. As we turned the car to enter, there stood my David all alone— Where were all the excited voices that I had heard on the ’phone ? Oh!. They’ll all be over later when you’re settled in this private home. The room, he said, was handy— it was just across the street— Should I want to take a stroll or get a bite to eat. But what he didn’t tell me was that it was two flights up And that all eight girls had one bed, and I’d share the kitchen with a pup! It seemed that all his buddies were a little short of cash If they rented the girls a room, then they couldn’t buy them hash! I’ll tell you that next morning, I was broke more ways than one— From that cot there in the kitchen, and my dear most gen erous son! The climax of my story, and I’m sure you’ll all agree Was when he was commissioned and awarded his Degree. There was no time to tarry on the campus that next day— For the girl he’d pinned—he married — and he took her far away. la-de-da snooty affairs our specialty! Ladies love meeting at Ramada Inn!
