At the end of nine innings, the score stood: SHS 2, Texas 0. Since that skunk by SHS, the Longhorns had gone 199 games, including exhibition and post-season play, without being shutout. But the man considered around the Southwest Conference as the Texas Killer — Steve Hillhouse — turned the trick Saturday at Kyle Field as the ★ ★ ★ Baseballers To Host Rice For 2 Games The Texas Aggies will host Rice University for two Southwest Conference baseball games Wed nesday and Thursday. Both games will be played at the Kyle Field Diamond, starting at 3 p. m. A&M is currently leading the conference with a 3-1 record, followed by Baylor with 2-1, TCU and Texas at 2-2, SMU with 1-2 and Rice with 0-2. The last time A&M played Rice, the Aggies blasted the Owls 10-0 behind the one-hit pitching of Steve Hillhouse. The Owls are lead by Billy Palmer, a 6-5, 220 righthander. He has put two good pitching per formances against Texas and SMU back-to-back, but had to settle for one victory and one loss. The Killeen junior, who managed a 2-3 SWC record last year on a 2.56 earned run average, has given up only seven hits in 17 innings while losing to Texas, 4-3, and winning from SMU, 6-1. The Aggies will counter with either Hillhouse or Tommy Chiles, considered the best one-two punch in the conference. Texas Aggies blasted Texas, 9-0, before 3,000 fans. The win gave A&M sole possession of first place in the conference race. Hillhouse was impressive in blanking the potent ’Horns. The Aggies ace lefty allowed the Long horns only five hits, fanning six and did not walk a batter. A&M was given help in the title chase by SMU and Rice. Rice held Baylor to a 5-5 tie in a 15 inning game that was called because of dark ness. The game will be replayed at a later date. As Rice helped the Aggies, so did SMU. The Mus tangs stomped TCU, 8-1. After the games, the Aggies had a 3-1 record, Baylor was a 2-1 and TCU and Texas stood at 2-2. The Aggies gave Hillhouse all the support he needed in the initial frame. A walk to Lou Camilli, a single by Mike Arrington and a double by Lance Cobb accounted for two runs. An error on a ground ed by Billy Crain sent the other tally home. From then on, the Hiller just coasted, but the Aggie batters did not. The Aggies collected 11 hits off two UT pitchers, with Mike Arrington leading the way with three hits and three runs scored. Hillhouse is now 3-0, with two of his wins coming in conference play, both shutouts. Besides their runs in the first the Aggies added two in the fifth on three singles by Camilli, Arrington and Cobb. They closed out the scoring in the sixth on single — yes, you guessed it — by Camilli, Arring ton and Crain sandwiched around walks to Richard Schwartz and Cobb. Texas threatened in the nineth, on singles by Forrest Boyd and Joe Gideon, but Hillhouse forced Minton White and Gary Moore to fly out to end the game. Wrapup Of Weekend Sports our specialty! Randy Matson and Gilbert Smith led the cindermen to sec ond place in the Corpus Christi Relays. By placing in second, the Aggies will go at least one more week claiming that they have never finished lower than the runnerup spot in a meet. The three-mile run was A&M’s downfall. The Aggies were lead ing the field by 1% points but ACC took first and second in the event and the Aggies were prac tically eliminated. A&M could have pulled the title out in the final event of the meet—the mile relay—but they finished fourth and ACC took first to ice the title. Matson and Smith were both double winners. Matson won the discus and the shot with tosses of 176-11% and 62-8, respectively. Smith won the 100 with a 9.8 and set a meet record in the 220 with a timing of 21.4. The other Aggie winners were Mike Schrider and Dan Meadows. Schrider won the high jump with a leap of 6-2 and Meadows, who has been in a bad slump lately, threw the javelin 211-10 for the top spot in that event. A&M’s other points came with a fourth in the 440 relay, Larry McGough’s fifth place in the 440- yard dash, Martin Rollins’ second in the pole vault, Steve Holtz’s third in the high jump, Willie Rodriguez’ fifth in the 880, Max Young’s third in the 440 hurdles and Bob Brown’s fourth in the broad jump. As the Aggie tracksters were going wild in Corpus, the tennis team was having its problem in the Rice Intercollegiate Invita tional Tournament in Houston. The Aggies finished in a tie for fourth with Pan American in the tourney. Still the tennis team was more successful than the golf squad. The golfers entertained Arkansas on the A&M Course and lost to the Razorbacks, 5-1. The Fish were not very suc cessful. They lost a doubleheader to the Texas Shorthorns, 4-2 and 11-0. The Fish got only one hit in the second game, that a single by Pete Maida to spoil the Texas no hit bid. Texas A&M’s fencing team rep resentatives were eliminated ear ly in competition at the NCAA national championships, but gained valuable experience ac cording to their coach. Thomas Bamum and James Snowden competed with fencers from 50 schools at the NCAA nationals at Duke University over the weekend. “Our main purpose in going was to gain more experience to be prepared for following years,” Aggie coach Russ Wieder re marked. “One or two touches in several bouts would have put our men further along toward the finales. Some of the bouts were that close.” HILLHOUSE MOBBED BY TEAMMATES winning pitcher congratulated after Texas win.
