Tom Chandler has been coach of the
Texas Aggie baseball team since 1959. In
six of the seven seasons—Chandler is now
in his eighth year — his team has fought it
out with the Texas Longhorns for the lea
gue title. And this year looks like no excep
tion.
A&M and Texas are two of the top 10
teams in the nation according to the latest
Collegiate Baseball poll. The Aggies are
ranked sixth and the Longhorns nineth. Both
teams have lost once for the year. A&M to
Baylor; Texas to TCU.
But ratings, polls and records mean noth
ing when these two teams meet. And Sat
urday at 2 p.m. at the Kyle Field diamond,
the Aggies and the Horns will renew their
rivalry.
The game will a “big” one for both teams.
The winner will either take over sole pos
session of the top spot in the Southwest
Conference race or remain in a tie. Cur
rently, A&M, Texas, TCU and Baylor are
tied for the lead with one loss apiece. The
loser of the A&M-Texas game will drop from
the list of the once-defeated into the twice-
defeated and out of a tie for the lead.
Also the winner of the A&M-Texas game
may come out on top of the league if both
TCU and Baylor lose.
Both teams did not meet their Waterloo
until conference play. Texas rolled over non
conference foes with ease and bombed sev
eral of the teams by as much as 10 runs.
Then they conquered Baylor, SMU and Rice
in conference, but TCU slowed the Texas
Express Wednesday, 6-2, to give the Long
horns a 9-1-1 record for the season and 3-1
for conference.
The Aggies did likewise. They pushed
non-conference teams aside with great hit
ting and excellent pitching, and it looked
like they were going to do the same thing
in conference by whitewashing SMU and
Rice, but Baylor stopped A&M Tuesday,
4-1.
Chandler will more than likely go with
Steve Hillhouse, A&M’s Texas killer.
The Hiller has the reputation around the
league that he can beat Texas any day.
Last year he stopped Texas once, 13-1, and
the previous year when he was voted “Sopho
more of the Year,” and the Aggies won the
title for the second time under Chandler
he put the clamp on the Horns twice.
Hillhouse has won two games this season
without a loss. He has allowed only one
earned run in over 25 innings of work. In
his last outing against Rice, he pitched a
one-hit shutout.
The rest of the Aggie lineup will be Lou
Camilli, third base; Mike Arrington, short
stop; Lance Cobb, second base, Billy Crain,
first base; Alan Koonce, left field; Chuck
Malitz or John Boss, center field, Joe Sta
ples, catcher, Richard Schwartz or Neil
Thompson, right field and Hillhouse.
