CONFERENCE TIME
Assistant Professor James N. Shepperd helps Mrs. Zaineb
Ben Ali of Libya with an English question. Watching
closely are Abdelhamid Zid of Tunisia and Dennis Arauz
of Nicaguara. Shepperd has taught English to foreign
students at A&M for 22 years.
Former English Professor
Teaches Foreign Students
Back in 1944, Janies N. Shep
perd, instructor in English at
Texas A&M, was assigned the
task of teaching English to 11
Latin-American students.
Twenty-two years later, Shep
perd, now an assistant professor,
still teaches foreign students
from all areas of the world.
“One day Dr. Thomas Mayo,
then department head, called and
asked me to teach those boys,”
Shepperd recalled. “I was con
fused . . . because I could say only
‘Si’ and ‘No’ in Spanish. That
first day I was so nervous I
couldn’t say those words under
pressure.”
Since that fateful day, Shep
perd has become adept in dealing
with international students. He
studied Latin and Greek as a stu
dent, but has picked up a smat
tering of other languages
through the years.
Shepperd, who earned masters
and bachelors degrees in English
at the University of Texas, is
quick to discredit colleagues who
aid foreign students.
“Every man who teaches or
counsels these students goes be
yond his duty in helping them,”
he contends.
A native of Tyler, Shepperd
uses numerous devices to drama
tize communication difficulties.
He favors idioms — adaptations
of situations familiar to all na
tionalities — as a teaching tool.
“Foreign students are allowed
“They are anxious to complete
their work here quickly and go
home,” he added. “It’s not easy to
learn a language, though.
“Most foreign students are ex
ceedingly emotional,” Shepperd
went on. “Realizing that they do
not do best when their minds are
not at ease, I make a game out
of many assignments.
One of his props is a telephone.
Students converse in English,
asking and answering questions
posed by Shepperd.
Sometimes the professor re
quires library reports of his stu
dents. “I send them to six or
eight different departments,” he
said, “to insure against the shar
ing of information.”

to speak only English in my
classes,” Shepperd explained.
“Some hardly speak at all when
they enroll, but we assign them
many kinds of projects for first
hand experience.”
After four weeks’ instruction,
Shepperd sends students to inter
view Americans they have not
met.
“Most of them hate to go, but
it’s important to get them talk
ing with English speaking peo
ple,” he stressed.
“Usually I have them visit in
the Corps of Cadets area,” Shep
perd continued. “They ask gen
eral questions, then write a re
port telling how they were re
ceived and details of the visit.
Often these visits lead to lasting
friendships.”
In another exercise, Shepperd
invites a girl to the class. Stu
dents are required to ask her for
a date. Naturally, the test pro
motes keen class interest.
Shepperd chuckled as he relat
ed the story of a Chinese boy
telling a girl that he had enjoyed
the evening with her.
“He bowed from the waist and
thanked her for a very nice eve
ning,” Shepperd related. “She
quickly replied: ‘What kind of a
boy are you?”
Foreign students, as a rule, try
hard.
are urged by Shepperd to take
physical education to learn games
and “some English” not usually
given in English classes.
Students frequently receive in
dividual assignments to visit
campus buildings and report oral
ly to the class. Shepperd told of
a university chapel visit by a
student.
“Having removed his shoes, the
boy prostrated himself on the
floor,” Shepperd explained. “An
American student came into the
chapel and asked what the for
eign student was doing. The
boy told him haltingly that he
was there on an English assign
ment. To this, the American re
plied: “English teachers can
think of the most stupid things
to do.”
Shepperd told another unique
story:
A student from India reached
A&M through an unusual recom
mendation. His father, a Har
vard graduate, wanted to send
his three sons to Harvard, but
costs were prohibitive. On a trip
to Liberia, he met two Austin
men and asked if they could sug
gest a highly respected engineer
ing school reasonable in cost.
“Hell, yes!,” one retorted.
“Texas A&M.”
Five days later, the student
checked in at Aggieland.
