Debate Team To Participate In Tourney Texas A&M’s debate team will participate in the debate meet at Northwest Louisiana State Col lege Thursday through Saturday. The team owns a .447 average, winning 38 rounds and losing 47. “With the exception of our poor showing at the Southwest Conference Meet in January,” commented sponsor Carl Kell, “we would be over .500. Our boys have worked hard and they have improved.” At the Southeastern State Col lege Debate Tournament in Du rant, Okla., Friday and Satur day, senior and junior teams posted opposite records. Senior team representatives Benny Mays, from Brashear, and David Gay from College Station, won three rounds and lost two. Both students are sophomores. The junior team, comprised of freshmen David Maddox, Mark Caperton, Ronald Hinds and Wayne Prescott, posted a 2-3 record. Schools they defeated were East Central State College, Rice University, Eastern New Mexi co University, North Texas State University and Stephen F. Aus tin College. Leland Jr., Rice University chemical engineering professor, will lecture Friday at Texas A&M. He will speak at 3 p.m. in the Geology Lecture Room during a chemical engineering seminar. “Recent Developments on the Theorem of Corresponding States”, related to research in thermodynamics, is Dr. Leland’s free public lecture topic. A 1947 chemical engineering graduate of A&M, Leland earned a masters degree at the Universi ty of Michigan and a doctorate at the University of Texas. On the Rice faculty since 1951, he has published numerous tech nical papers in thermodynamics and physical properties of pure components and mixtures. CE Department Awarded NSF Grant A $9,500 National Science Foundation grant has been awarded to Dr. Harry M. Coyle of the Department of Cvil En gineering. Assistant Professor Coyle is principal investigator of “Re search Initiation — Dynamic Load Deformation Relationships for a Pile-Soil System in Clay”, which involves differences in sta tic loads and rapidly applied loads to pilings. The one-year grant provides for a graduate assistant. Prof Named Chairman Of Cotton Conference Dr. Page Morgan of the De partment of Plant Sciences has been named program chairman for the 21st annual Beltwide Cot ton Defoliation and Physiology Conference next January in Dal las. The session is a meeting place for plant physiologists, biochem ists and agronomists working with cotton throughout the Unit ed States. Sponsored by the National Cot ton Council, the conference is held in conjunction with technical meetings on cotton pathology, genetics and entomology as well as the Beltwide Cotton Produc tion and Mechanization Confer- Engineering Students Win Top Awards Gene Herzog and David Wood ard, of the American Institute of Industrial Engineers student chapter at A&M, won third place and honorable mention awards in the annual regional student paper competition at Manhattan, Kansas, March 4-5. Herzog, a senior from Odessa, won honorable mention for his paper and presentation on “A Comparison of the CRAFT and Wimmert Methods of Optimum Equipment Location.” Woodard, a junior from Bon ham, won third place with a paper on “Organization of Work.” His presentation included a film of an experiment conducted in the Department of Industrial En gineering. Firemen Instructors To Attend Conference Three Firemen’s Training Di vision representatives of Texas A&M’s Engineering Extension Service will attend meetings in Memphis, Tenn., March 21-25. Chief Henry D. Smith, will huddle with National Fire Pro tection Association committee to study standards for the nation. Instructors James Bland and James R. Dobson will partici pate in the 37 th annual Fire Department Instructors’ Confer ence and the State Fire Service Training Instructors’ Workshop. Leadership Committee Plans Training Trip A leadership training trip is being planned by the Leadership Committee of the Memorial Stu dent Center Student Directorate for April 2-3. Selected Student leaders will spend two days in Houston. They will meet and dine with promi nent Houston business and civic leaders. Tentative itinerary includes a stay in the Shamrock-Hilton Ho tel and visits to the Manned Spacecraft Center, the Port of Houston, Alley Theater and the Museum of Fine Arts. Attend ing a performance of Houston’s Symphony Ochestra is also scheduled. Corps and civilian leaders are selected for the trip by nomina tion from the dean of their col lege. Exposition To Display Outdoor Exhibits Ropemaking, pioneering, ax- manship, camping, woodwork and outdoor safety will be among 40 booths in the Arrowmoon Scout ing Exposition April 1-2 at Bryan’s National Guard Armory. District Commissioner Ralph McCormick said the Bryan Boys Club Choir will perform from 8-8:30 p.m. April 1. Two Girl Scouts units will pre sent a program April 2. Cubs, Scouts and Explorers in the district will exhibit “county fair” displays of scouting activ ities. Tickets, at 50 cents each, are available from district Scouters. JP Institute Set March 21-23 Fifty participants are expected for the Justice of the Peace and Constables Institute March 21- 23. Taught by the Police Training Division staff of A&M’s Engi neering Extension Service, the 24-hour course is sponsored by the Texas Law Enforcement Foundation and Justice of Peace and Constables Association of Texas. For justices of the peace, city judges, constables, other judges and law enforcement officers, the institute covers court room procedure, analysis of criminal laws, pleas, trials, laws of arrest, search and evidence, civil law pertaining to justice courts, and public relations. English Head To Talk At Roundtable Dr. John Q. Anderson, Depart ment of English head, will be a featured writer at the Readers and Writers Roundtable Sunday at Salado. Plant Sciences To Purchase Third Electron Microscope Texas A&M will soon add a third electron microscope to its research and teaching facilities. The newest instrument, to be purchased with a $28,200 grant from the National Science Found ation, will be installed in the De partment of Plant Science. The other two are in the Electron Microscopy Center and the Bio chemistry and Nutrition Depart ment. An electron microscope is a non-optical device which can view particles and substances too small for ordinary scopes. It can take pictures of viruses and some of the larger molecules. Dr. David Rosberg, head of the Department of Plant Sciences, said the electron microscope will be a valuable addition to the de partment’s research and teaching activities. It should be especially useful, he said, in biochemical genetics studies. Texas A&M’s annual Agricul tural Convocation March 22 will feature the much-discussed slide picture program, “Murder of Silence.” The pictures, produced by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Depart ment, are shown on three screens by three projectors and depict for 45 minutes the past, present and future of wildlife resources, con servation and outdoor recreation in Texas. William M. Gosdin, director for the Parks and Wildlife Depart ment, will present the program. “This film concerns people and space,” he said. “Beginning with the solitude and peace of the rural countryside, it documents increasing conflicts, tensions and congestion of modern urban exist ence.” The convocation, which starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Memorial Stu dent Center Ballroom, is spoil' sored by the Student Agricultural Council in the College of Agri culture.
