SOUTHWESTERN STATES TELEPHONE C0. ^ A Member of the GTtE Family of Companies By GERALD GARCIA Battalion Sports Editor Texas Aggie first baseman Billy Crain drove in four runs and Tommy Chiles and Billy Johnson turned in fine early sea son pitching performances as the Aggies swept a doubleheader from the Sul Ross Lobos, 2-0 and 5-0, Tuesday afternoon at Bryan’s Travis Park. The twinbill sweep gave Coach Tom Chandler’s Aggies an un blemished 6-0 record for the young campaign. A&M will host the University of Houston Cougars at Kyle Field at 3 p.m. Thursday for the last non-conference game be fore Southwest Conference com petition begins Saturday in Fort Worth against the Texas Chris tian Horned Frogs. Both Chiles and Johnson looked in mid-season form as they hurled three-and five-hitters, re spectively. The wins gave A&M a sweep of the three-game series with Sul Ross. Chiles got all the support he needed in the fourth inning when second baseman Lance Cobb, A&M’s all-American and all-con ference performer, singled to left and later advanced to sec ond. Crain then lined a single to left center field for the Ag gies’ first run. Crain was also instrumental in A&M’s second run of the seven inning first game. He singled to center for his second hit in three tries, stole second and raced home after two were out when catcher Joe Staples drilled a hit to left field. Chiles, besides allowing only three hits, walked two and fanned six. Chandler praised both of the pitchers for their outstanding performances. “When you get good pitching, you are hard to beat and the way Billy (Johnson) and Tom my (Chiles) pitched . . . well, they just looked real good for this early in the year,” Chandler said. Johnson became the first A&M pitcher to go the full nine in nings as he turned his second fine performance of the season. He pitched six strong innings against Texas Lutheran Thurs day. RAMADA INN Bryan - College Station 846-8811 did not allow a Lobo base runner to reach third after the first inning. He received credit for three strike outs and two walks. After the shaky first inning when a double play by the Aggie infield killed a major Sul Ross threat, Johnson took command of the Lobos. The Aggies gave him all the runs he needed in the first when short stop Jeff Warren scored on a single by Crain. Cobb later added the second marker for the Aggies in the initial frame by racing home on a passed ball. Crain doubled home two in surance runs in the sixth frame after Warren and Cobb had sin gled to left. The Aggies added their final tally in the seventh on a walk to right fielder Richard Schwartz, an error and a wild pitch. Crain, who broke out of an early season batting slump, col lected four hits in the double- header in seven trips to the plate. John Boss, A&M’s left fielder, turned in the fielding gem of the doubleheader as he made a lung ing, back-handed stab of a long drive the Lobo’s Kenny Richard son hit into the left field corner in the sixth inning. Stengel Selected To Hall Of Fame ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. ) — Casey Stengel breezed into baseball’s Hall of Fame Tuesday at the age of 75, waving a blue New York Mets cap and filling the air with pure Stengelese. Only a Stengel could breeze in with a slight limp, a lasting souvenir of the broken left hip that forced his retirement as manager of the Mets last Aug. 30. News of the unanimous vote by the 11-man veterans committee after an extraordinary special election came as a complete surprise to the 01’ Professor wha had been lured to Miller Huggins-Stengel Field on another pretext. CASEY CAME prepared with a few words honoring his old sidekick, George Weiss, president of the Mets, only to hear Ford Frick, ( the former commissioner and new chairman of the veter ans committee, tell him of his election. Naturally, Casey was not lost for words. “When you’re alive at the present time,” he said at one stage, “it is nice to know you’ve done something in your life that people thought was worthwhile. “So many men done amazing things it makes you feel regret that four or five others are not in it. I feel sorry for the others that didn’t get in.” STENGEL BECAME eligible without the normal five-year wait ing period when the rules were changed Jan. 30. Under the new code a manager, umpire or executive who retires at 65 or over is eligible after a six-months wait. Casey retired Aug. 30 so he became eligible appropriately on Feb. 30 — a nonexistent date. Capable, Qualified and Experienced Vote For I. N.
