Schedules Banquet
Nine awards for state water
and wastewater plants will be
presented Wednesday at the an
nual banquet of the Texas Wa
ter and Sewage Works Associa
tion’s 48th Short School at Texas
A&M.
Honor Roll awards in five
population categories will be pre
sented by Dr. J. E. Peavy, Com
missioner of Health of the Texas
State Department of Health.
Awards are sponsored by the de
partment.
The principal banquet address,
“Public Relations — A Must,”
will be made by Lee D. Herring,
vice president of the Grand
Prairie State Bank.
School registration increased
20 per cent over previous years
Monday. The two-division school,
usually attended by about 800
water and sewage superintend
ents and operators, had signed
an additional 255. Registration
began Sunday.
Instruction involving 181 speak
ers, certification examinations
and election of 1966 officers will
keep school participants busy the
remainder of the week.
G. R. Herzig Jr., state sanitary
engineer and association secre
tary, noted A&M is a vital link
in certification of water and sew
age plant operators.
“A&M is a top-level partner
in training, through its Civil En
gineering Department, the School
of Engineering and the Engineer
ing Extension Service,” Herzig
said. “The Health Department,
A&M and various agencies work
together to improve technical
knowhow.”
Examinations will be given to
about 100 applicants Wednesday
and Friday, said Sam Warring-
don, chief engineer of the Opera
tors Advisory Programs.
The Texas Water Pollution
Control Association’s business
dinner highlighted Tuesday ac
tivity. Speakers were Arthur D.
Caster, vice president of the Wa
ter Pollution Control Federation
of Cincinnati, and Gordon E. Mc-
Callum, presidential assistant of
Infilco in Tucson. The recently
retired head of the federal wa
ter control program discussed
“Recent Federal Water Pollution
Control Legislation.”
Ray Faust, executive secretary
of the American Waterworks As
sociation, replaced AW A vice
president Leo Louis as speaker
at a Wednesday morning general
session.

Prof Named Editor
Of Climatology Volume
John Griffiths has been named
an editor for “World Survey of
Climatology,” an encyclopedia to
be published in 12 volumes.
The associate professor of
meteorology has been assigned
Africa by editor-in-chief Dr. H.
Landsberg, chief climatologist of
the U. S. Weather Bureau.
Griffiths noted Africa will be
treated in one complete volume
although it is the second largest
continent in the world. A com
plete volume will deal with the
climates of the Soviet Union with
another devoted to the rest of
Asia.
“This will be the most compre
hensive encyclopedia of its kind,”
Griffiths commented. In collect
ing and editing articles for the
300-page African volume, the
London - educated meteorlogist
estimated he will be dealing with
about a quarter-million words.
The A&M professor spent 12
years in Ethiopia, Kenya, Ugan
da, Tanganyika, the Rhodesias
and South Africa. He received
his B.S. degree at Kings College
of London in 1947 and the
masters degree at Imperial Col
lege in 1949.
The London-born scientist has
published a number of papers and
books.
