THE BATTALION
MAROON PHONE FOR PRESIDENT
President Earl Rudder admires the maroon and white tele
phone being- installed by Southwestern States Telephone
Company combination manager Jim Copeland. Rex Bailey,
right, Bryan division manager for the firm had the instru
ment designed in the university’s colors. It is the only
maroon telephone in the industry he believes. Bailey, a
graduate of the University of Texas, conceded he had be
come an Aggie booster since moving to Brazos County in
1965. He grinningly told Rudder the interworkings of the
handset were painted UT orange.

year amounts to approximately
$325 million.
Long received his Bachelor’s
degree in civil engineering from
Texas A&M in 1932. He holds
a law degree from the Arkansas
Law School at Little Rock. He
also attended the Army Indus
trial College in Washington, D.
C., Engineer School at Fort Bel-

Staff College at Fort Leaven
worth, Kan., and the Army In
telligence School at Fort Hola-
bird, Md.
He has been with the Corps
of Engineers since 1935, when
he went to work in the Vicks
burg District. During World
War II he served as an Army of
ficer in the Vicksburg and Little
Rock Districts, where he super
vised design and construction of
numerous Army, Air Force and
ordnance installations. After
the war he remained with the
Little Rock District in a civilian
engineer capacity, engaged in
the planning and design of large
multiple-purpose power and flood
control dams and navigation
works.
Long moved back to Dallas
from Little Rock in 1957 to be
come design and construction co
ordinator for the $1.2-billion
Arkansas River multipurpose de
velopment. That project, now
nearly 50 per cent completed,
will make the Arkansas River
navigable from the Mississippi
River to a point near Tulsa,
Okla., produce hydroelectric pow
er, provide needed flood control
and related benefits. In his more
recent capacity as chief of pro
gram development, he has been
responsible for programming all
civil works activities of the Di
vision, which for several years
have totaled approximately $200-
million annually.
Photography Exhibit
At Student Center
A show of the photography of
Todd Webb is on exhibit through
March 17 at the Memorial Stu
dent Center.
One hundred and one black and
white photographs* called “The
Overland Trail and Some Ghost
Towns” are on display on the

“Most of the photographs are
of visual relics of the California
and Oregon Trails — the settle
ments which grew up and flour
ished or died along the route,”
commented David Gay, chairman
of the MSC Contemporary Arts
Committee.
The collection is on loan from
the Amon Carter Museum of
Western Art in Fort Worth.
Most of the pictures were taken
during the past 10 years, Gay
noted.
