    COMPUTER FODDER
A Data Processing' Center visitor, Nancy Leach, gets a
briefing from programmer Jim Forehand about operation
of the IBM 7094, a high speed computer. Information from
9,000 cards in boxes on the left, is logged on 1,750 feet of
magnetized tape on the spool held by Mrs. Leach. A print
ing machine can spew the information back in 15 minutes.

Brainy Computer Collects
Student Information Data
A " Supercalifragilisticexpidiali-
docious” computer at Texas A&M
knows almost everything about
9,000 students.
The tongue-twisting adjective
refers to the IBM 7094, among
the world’s brainiest computers.
More than a quarter-million
items of information about stu-'
dents are instantly available to
university officials. •
If a dean wants a list of sen
iors, he relays the requests to
A&M’s Data Processing Center.
When the computer program is
developed, a high-speed print
ing machine can crank out the
information in 1.6 minutes.
Some students are already sing
ing the computer’s praise. IBM
cards keyed to the computer
helped speed up spring registra
tion noticeably. Even employes
of the Registrar’s Office man
aged to smile about the time
saving plan.
The card plan works something
like this: A student is handed
a packet containing seven cards.
THURSDAY
Arthur Anderson and Company
— accounting, general business,
industrial engineering.
Cities Service Oil Company —
chemical engineering, civil engi
neering, electrical engineering, in

tion, finance, economics, mechan

none of which should be folded,
bent, spindled or mutilated.
Women students have an addi
tional card to fill out — a pink
one on which they list status
as an immediate relative of a
student, faculty or staff member.
When the cards are gathered,
they are fed into the ravenous
IBM 7094. Information, ranging
from the student’s hometown to
the number of hours he is car
rying and his overall grade point
ratio, are logged on magnetic
tape by the mechanical marvel.
One of the cards, for instance,
is for updating information al
ready on file. If all information
requested on the card is the
same as last semester, the stu
dent simply checks a block.
Should his address have changed,
he prints the new address in an
other space.
The computer raced through
these cards in 41 minutes, regis
tering its findings on 1,760 feet
of tape.

Programmer Jim Forehand,
who helped devise the memory
bank system, is aided by DPC
Operations Supervisor George
Taack, programmer Lester Wood,
16 key punch operators, three
full time employes and three
graduate students.
All the "bugs” have not been
chased from the plan. More
research is in progress.
Registration may remain pain
ful, but the likelihood of stu
dents suffering from writer’s
cramp is diminishing.

General Electric is passing* out GENIUS buttons. What’s the point?
We want to spread the word that
there’s room at General Electric
for talented people who want
to take on big challenges.
We like to call these people
GENIUSES. But what they're
called isn’t so important as
where they’re headed. And at the
General Electric Company,
there’s plenty of room for
GENIUSES, no matter what
their particular field of interest.
If you want to be recognized for
your talents come to General
Electric, where the young men
are important men.
And be among 1 the first on your
campus to own a genuine
GENIUS button. It will serve as
a reminder that G.E... . and
GENIUS . . . and important
challenges ... all go together.
