Scientists Take Dead Aim
Against Troublesome Weevil
Agricultural scientists are taking
dead aim at complete eradication
of the boll weevil, the cotton
farming industry’s biggest insect
troublemaker.
Some of the major obstacles
have already been overcome, and
researchers are making progress
on remaining problems.
One of these researchers is Dr.
E. F. Knipling, director of the
U. S. Department of Agriculture
Entomology Research Division at
Beltsville, Md., and a speaker at
Texas A&M’s 15th annual Agri
cultural Aviation Conference and
Short Course on Pest Control this
week.
About 350 conference members
heard the scientist say the econ
omic importance of the boll
weevil justifies complete eradi
cation of the insect.
“M o r e o v e r, I believe the
chances are good that practical
procedures can be developed for
complete elimination of boll
weevil populations.”
One of those practical proced
ures is integrated use of insecti
cides and sterile male boll weevil
releases, an “aproach that looks
especially promising,” he said.
A feature of the system is maxi
mum control with minimum in
secticide use.
