After SWC Lead Trimmed
Aggies Meet
TCU Saturday
By GERALD GARCIA
Battalion Sports Editor
Texas Tech’s Red Raiders and the University
of Texas Longhorns got their revenge. Will TCU
get theirs? Or will the Aggies surge back?
These questions will be answered Saturday night
in G. Rollie White Coliseum when Coach Shelby
Metcalf’s Aggies host the TCU Horned Frogs. Aggie
officials expect another capacity crowd. Only a few
reserve seats remain and general admission tickets
go on sale at 5:15 p.m. Saturday.
The Aggies must think they have joined a new
conference since second-round play started in the
SWC. Metcalf’s crew held a commanding three-
game lead after first-round competition ended, but
after two games in the second round the Aggies’
lead was trimmed to one game.
FIRST, THE AGGIES caught the University
of Texas on one of their hottest nights and the
Farmers suffered their first conference loss, 110-82.
Then, the Aggies invaded one of the most dan
gerous foreign courts — Lubbock’s Municipal Coli
seum — and came out dangling atop the SWC with
only a one-game lead as the Red Raiders shot down
the Aggies, 98-85.
Now, it is TCU’s turn! The Frogs will be in
town Saturday for an 8 p.m. encounter with the
Aggies. During first-round play, while the Aggies
were threatening to make the race a one-team affair,
the Frogs were beaten in Fort Worth by the Cadets,
81-72.
The Aggies must win to stay on top. A loss by
the Cadets and a win by the SMU Mustangs, who
will be playing Arkansas in Dallas Saturday, will
put the race in a two-way tie.
“If we can bounce back and beat TCU Saturday,
we can get our morale back and stay in the race,”
Metcalf noted.
Big John Beasley, A&M’s scoring champion,
will lead the Aggies against the Frogs. Beasley
now holds all of A&M’s scoring marks.
THE BEASLEY SLATE READS:
1. Most Points, Career (All Games): 1,422.
(Old record — 1,383 by Carroll Broussard, 1960-62).
2. Most Points, Career (SWC Games): 835.
(Old record — 825 by Carroll Broussard, 1960-62.)
3. Most Points, Full Season: 619. (Old rec
ord — 568 by Bennie Lenox in 1963).
4. Most Points, SWC Season: 395. (Old rec
ord — 352 by Bennie Lenox in 1963).
5. Most Field Goals, SWC Games: 19. (Old
record — 15 by Carroll Broussard in 1961).
6. Most Field Goals, Full Season: 250. (Old
record — 190 by Bennie Lenox in 1964).
7. Most Field Goals, SWC Season: 156. (Old
record — 119 by Carroll Broussard in 1961).
8. Most Field Goals, One Game: 19. (Ties
old record set by Bennie Lenox in 1963).
Beasley also holds these SWC marks:
1. Most points, SWC Season: 395. (Old rec
ord — 362 by Dick O’Neal of TCU in 1955).
2. Most Field Goals, Full Season: 250. (Old
record — 243 by Kendall Rhine of Rice in 1964).
3. Most Field Goals, SWC Season: 156. (Old
record — 145 by Kendall Rhine of Rice in 1963).
The 6-9 Beasley also holds the Aggie rebound
mark. He grabbed 261 rebounds last season to
break his own mark of 237 set in 1964.
Joining Beasley in the starting lineup will
be Randy Matson, Dick Rector, Eddie Dominguez
and Dick Stringfellow.
Matson and Rector showed some shooting ability,
which the Aggies have lacked in the last two games,
against the Red Raiders. Rector hit a season high
of 21, while Matson connected for 15.
“Rector was just tremendous,” Metcalf said
after the Tech game, “and that Randy (Matson)
just keeps coming around. He gets better all the
time.”
Other conference action will find Arkansas
meeting SMLT in Dallas and Texas Tech invading
Austin to play the Longhorns.
JOHN BEASLEY
. . . broke all A&M career
scoring marks.

Apprec iation
For Telegram
The Aggie basketball team expressed thanks for the telegram
of support sent to them Tuesday morning by Aggies and fans before
the game with Texas Tech in Lubbock.
Initiated by KORA’s Aggie Hour and sponsored by The Battalion,
the telegram read.
“We, the undersigned, plus all the Aggies listening on the
radio will be pulling for you Tuesday night. Just give it your
best. That’s all we can ask. Beat the everliving h outta Texas
Tech.”
“That was certainly nice of them,” said guard Dick Rector.
“We really appreciate the support.”
The telegram, signed by 533 Aggies, was an idea conceived
on short notice by the Aggie Hour’s Jerry Cooper and Tom Morgan.
A desk was set up in the Memorial Student Center between the
post office and the fountain room at 1 p.m. Monday and signing
ceased at 8 p.m. the same day.
The plan had no advance publicity. Headed by P. L. (Pinkie)
Downs, Aggies paid 10 cents each to sign their names.
“We didn’t expect that many names so fast,” commented co
captain John Beasley.
Impressed by the spirit shown, guard Eddie Dominguez noted,
“That was something real nice to do for us. I wish I knew all
533 so I could thank them personally. This has never happened
to me before.”
Taking time out from a spirited workout, center Randy Matson
assured the fans that “everyone on the team appreciated it.”
