Cadets To Seek
8th Win Saturday
By GERALD GARCIA
Battalion Sports Editor
Shelby Metcalf, Texas A&M’s head mentor, gave a
sigh of relief heard throughout the Southwest Confer
ence Saturday night after the University of Texas had
upended the high-flying Texas Tech Red Raiders, 87-74.
After the Longhorns had stunned TCU, 77-75, Tues
day night, Metcalf’s moan was heard throughout the
basketball world.
“It looks like the Longhorns have found the winning combina
tion and are really fighting back,” Metcalf said after learning
of the Horns’ win over the Frogs.
Metcalf’s surprising Aggies, who currently hold a commanding
three-game bulge in SWC play, will host the “new-looking” Long
horns in G. Rollie White Coliseum at 8 p.m. Saturday.
Coach Harold Bradley’s Longhorns have been scrambling all
season, but did give the Aggies their biggest scare during the
first round of conference action. Saturday’s game will open second-
round play for both teams and Texas will bring a 3-4 norm into
the game, while the Aggies hold a perfect 7-0 conference record.
In the first meeting between the two bitter rivals, Texas held
a 15-point lead, 44-29, in the first half before A&M got moving and
downed the Longhorns, 64-57.
The Horns did the same thing to TCU that A&M did to them.
They were behind by four points at the half, and by as much as
12 with 10 minutes left, but pulled the game out on a jump shot
by Dale Dotson with three seconds left.
Against the Red Raiders, the resurging Longhorns used a
sagging 1-2-2 zone that completely stopped the heralded Dub Malaise
and Bob Glover. Malaise only scored seven points, while Glover
was held to three by the “new” Longhorns.
One of the big reasons the Texas Longhorns have shown such
a great improvement since the semester break is the addition of
Noel Stout to the starting lineup and an improved defense.
The junior guard, a transfer from Lon Morris, “playing his
second fine game in a row sparked a Steers’ rally in the TCU
game,” wrote Fred Sanner of the Austin American sports staff.
Stout will team with Paul Olivier, Dotson, Charley Turnbough
and Mickey White in the Longhorns’ starting lineup.
The Aggies, fresh from a stunning, 77-71, victory over the
Tech Red Raiders, will counter with John Beasley, the conference’s
most prolific scorer, Randy Matson, Eddie Dominguez, Dick String-
fellow and Dick Rector.
A&M DEFENSIVE WIZARD
Dick Stringfellow is the Cadets’ top de
fensive man. He limited Baylor’s Jimmy
Turner and TCU’s Jim Evans to one field
goal each. “That Stringfellow!’’ marveled
TCU’s Coach Buster Brannon after the
Aggies beat TCU. Stringfellow will start
at a forward post against the University
of Texas Saturday night in G. Rollie
White Coliseum.

In Tech Game
Is there a jeweler in the house?
This might easily have been the
plea of Texas A&M Coach Shelby
Metcalf and Texas Tech Coach
Gene Gibson in Tuesday’s cage
tussle at G. Rollie White Coli
seum.
Late in the freshman game be
tween A&M and Lon Morris
Junior College, a “second hand”
light of the coliseum clock failed.
The malfunction could not be
corrected before the varsity clash.
Metcalf and Gibson huddled
with timer Francis Lynch to
probe the problem. | Since the
matter of seconds caused no
special consternation until the
final minute of each half, it was
decided that Lynch would use a
stop watch during the last
minute.
Lynch called seconds in counts
of ten—50, 40, 30—and public
address announcer Jim O’Connell
aired the time for players and
fans. Tech used the count to
help run out the clock in the first
half and protect a 40-36 lead.
