Fisticuffs Highlight Fish Loss Page 10 College Station, Texas Thursday, January 20, 1966 THE 0ATTALlOf By LARRY UPSHAW Battalion Sports Writer The hefty Fish cagers held their own in a brief fist ex change, but fell short in the point department, dropping a 65-61 de cision to the TU Shorthorns Tuesday night. Gregory Gym was the scene of an unscheduled one-round bout which climaxed a tension-packed first half. The Fish performed well in fist action but hit a score less dead spot in the second stanza. “Our inability to hit in the last few seconds, plus our sloppy ball handling, contributed to the loss,” commented Fish Coach Jim Cul pepper. “We lost the ball too many times without getting a shot.” The frosh squads played share- and-share-alike for 15 minutes after Fish forward Ronnie Peret swished a 20-foot jumper to begin scoreboard action. But the Year lings hit a warm spell with five- and-one-half minutes remaining in the first period and center Bill Brosseau netted two from the left comer to erect a six- point lead, 27-21. After a Fish bucket cut the advantage to 27-23, Peret, 6-9, and Brosseau, 6-6, squared off in the main event after a mad scramble for a loose ball resulted in eight bodies hitting the hard woods. Peace was declared quick ly and the Fish shaved the TU lead to knot the score, 27-27. But Sip guard Larry Smith wadded through the Fish pond with two slick layups and a some zipping passes for a 35-31 in termission lead. The effects of first-half com bat cleared from Yearling sculls as a three-point lead suddenly became ten, 48-38, with 14:11 to play. Then the mail train switched directions as the Fish caught fire with guard Curley Hallman flashing in two field goals for a 57-54 lead with 7:56 left. Then the blow torch became an iceberg for seven minutes and nineteen seconds as the Fish failed to scratch the scoreboard. TU hit nine points for a 63-57 bulge before Fish guard Billy Bob Barnett and Hallman aced two charity tosses each for a 63-61 deficit with 36 seconds left. But the scoreboard stayed silent Aggiewise and two Shorthorn freethrows formed the final mar gin. Barnett proved tops again in the basket and on the boards with 24 points and 18 rebounds. Culpepper singled out Peret, a swift big man with 12 points and GRADUATE STUDENTS All Graduate Students who wish to have their portraits made for the Ag- gieland ’66 should do so be fore Feb. 21.
