Dr. Kirklyn M. Kerr, center,
pathology instructor, was awarded a $1,000
travel grant last week to attend the World
Poultry Congress in Kiev, Russia in August.
The grant was presented by Salsbury Lab
oratories in conjunction with the National
Turkey Federation in Chicago. Making the

Robert A. Welch Foimdatiqn Awards
$333,000 Grant For Cyclotron
The Robert A. Welch founda
tion has announced a revised
grant of one-third of a million
dollars for the ion optic system of
the A&M Cyclotron, according to
Dr. A. D. Suttle Jr., project man
ager for the Cyclotron Institute.
Additional payments of two-
ninths of a million dollars each
will be made on April 1 and Sept.
1, with the final payment to be
made upon completion of the
project.
Former Students
Meet Feb. 11-12
The single largest assembly of
the official body of former stu
dent leaders across the nation will
be held here Feb. 11-12, Buck
Wierus, executive secretary of the
Former Student Association, has
announced.
The assembly will be high
lighted by the semiannual coun
cil meeting on Feb. 12, at which
1966 association officers will be
elected.
President Earl Rudder will also
speak to the assembly.
The assembly will open Feb. 11
with the Executive Board meet
ing. The Class Agents Confer
ence and the Conference of Club
Officers will be held that same
day.
The group will attend the A&M-
Texas basketball game Feb. 12
and meet at breakfast Feb. 13
with several professors and
coaches.
Turfgrass Group
Praises A&M
The Texas Turfgrass Associa
tion has cited Texas A&M for
“20 years of cooperation in grass
research and development.”
The citation, drafted at the
association’s 20th annual meeting,
was presented to A&M President
Earl Rudder by W. G. Scheibe of
Dallas, TTA president.
Rudder called the resolution
pledged continued support of the

agency.
“This action by the Texas Turf
grass Association is accepted with
grateful appreciation,” he said.
“We look forward to continuing
cooperation and progress.”
Membership Open
In Grad Book Club
Graduate students can now
apply for membership in the
Graduate Book Club for next
semester’s meetings at the YMCA.
Don Willis, Graduate Planning
Committee co-ordinator, said re
quirements for prospective mem
bers are the advance payment of
$2, which covers meals for four
meetings, and reading the club’s
book selections. This fee is to be
paid at the front desk in the
YMCA.
He added that the programs are
designed for graduate students
who are interested in participat
ing in discussions on “great
books.”
The selected books, which will
be available at the main desk of
the YMCA, are Edward Albee’s
“Who’s Afraid of Virginia
Woof?”; Edward Williams’ “One
Man’s Freedom”; Barbara Ward’s
“The Rich Nations and Poor Na
tions,” and John Steinbecks “The
Pearl.”
The discussions are held on
Tuesdays from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Fertilizer Meet
Elects President
James A. Potts, president of the
Taylor-Evans Farm Stores, Inc.,
in Amarillo, is the new president
of the Texas Plant Food Educa
tional Society.
Potts was elected during the
annual Texas Fertilizer and Lime
stone Conference last week at
College Station. He succeeds
Howard Mitchell, Olin Mathieson

tive in Bryan.
The new vice president is W. S.
Harpool of Harpool Feed and Seed
at Denton. Sherman Clark of the
Texas Gulf Sulphur Company in
Houston was reelected secretary-
treasurer.
Potts is a widely known North
west Texas agriculturist. During
his youth, he was an outstanding
Lubbock County 4-H Club mem
ber. His honors included a na
tional 4-H meat animal award in
1941.
The conference was sponsored
by Texas A&M in cooperation
with the Texas Agricultural Lime
stone Association and the Texas
Plant Food Educational Society.
Special awards during the con
ference banquet included en
graved plaques to Mitchell as
immediate past president and to
Clark for “11 years of distin
guished service” to the TPFES.

Commencement Exercise
All students who are candidates for the
degree of Doctor of Philosophy are required
to order hoods as well as the Doctor’s caps
and gowns. The hoods are to be left at
the Registrar’s Office no later than 1:00
p. m., Tuesday, January 18 (thi^* will be
accomplished by a representative of the
University Exchange Store). The Ph.D.
hoods will not be worn in the procession
since all such candidates will be hooded on
the stage as part of the ceremony.
Candidates for the Master’s Degree will
wear the cap and gown; all civilian stu
dents who are candidates for the Bachelor’s
Degree will wear the cap and gown ;
ROTC students who are candidates for the
Bachelor’s Degree will wear the appropriate
uniform. All military personnel who are
candidates for the degrees, graduate or
undergraduate, will wear the uniform only.
Rental of caps and gowns may be arranged
with the Exchange Store. Orders may be
placed between 8 :00 a. m., Monday, January
3 and 5:00 p. m., Friday, January 14. The
rental is as follows: Doctor’s cap and
gown $5.25, Master’s cap and gown $4.75,
Bachelor’s cap and gown $4.25. Hood
rental is the same as that for the cap and
gown. A 2% sales tax is required in addi
tion to these rentals. Payment is required
at the time of placing order.
