Weightlifting Club Plans Bryan Meet Sam Leads LSC In Prelim Games By Associated Press Sam Houston has the best non - conference won - lost rec ord in early season basketball activity in the Lone Star Con ference but it does not lead in any of the individual departments. Sam Houston will carry a 7-4 non-conference record into the start of league games this week end. Howard Payne, with a 6-5 mark, is the only other team above the .500 level. Sam Hous ton and Howard Payne meet Saturday night at Huntsville. Conference statistics released Wednesday showed that Howard Payne’s Dan Smith is the lead ing scorer, averaging 23 points a game, and is tops in field goal percentage with a .620 average. The leading free throw shooter is Fred Steele of Stephen F. Aus tin, and teammate Mike Cook is the top rebounder. Eddie Nelson of Howard Payne, who scored 22 points and took 25 rebounds, was named “players of the week”. An open weight lifting contest sponsored by the Texas A&M Club will take place Friday in the downtown Bryan Boys Club. Lifters will have an opportuni ty to demonstrate their ability in two events: the press and the squat. Tournament adviser Henry Heatherly expects mainly local talent to enter, but points out that anyone may compete. The contest is open to the public and there is no admission. Aggie Club Grid Banquet To Hear ‘Voice Of SWC’ Philosophy Departmei Adds New Course The Department of Philosoj and Humanities has added graduate course for the spii: semester. Philosophy 601, “Major ft osophical Issues,” will be taif by acting department head, 1 John Orr. No prerequisites hi been announced. “This course is designed students whose graduate m may be enriched by an acquaii ance with philosophical concef yet who have not developed philosophical foundation in til previous studies,” Orr said. The Aggie Club will honor Tex as A&M’s fotball squads—varsi ty and freshman—with a banquet at the Ramada Inn here at 7 p.m. January 22. Kern Tips, voice of South west Conference football on the Humble Network, will be the principal speaker. Herschel Maltz, president of The Aggie Club, will be master of ceremo nies. One of the night’s highlights will be the presentation of the “Aggie Heart Award” to a mem ber of the 1965 varsity. The players already have cast bal lots for the award but Coach Gene Stallings will not reveal the results until the night of the banquet. It will be the only award presented at the banquet. Tickets for the banquet are available to the public at $5 each. They are on sale at Conway & Co. in Bryan, the Ramada Inn in College Station and at the athletic business office in G.
