Aggies Take Aim At Houston THE BATTALION Thursday, December 9, 1965 College Station, Texas Page 5 A&M Varsity Basketball Statistics After 2 Games The Aggies face one of their strongest opponents Thursday night when they take on the Cou gars from the University of Houston in G. Rollie White at 8 p.m. “We’ll have to make a supreme effort to even stay within 20 points of them,” said A&M Head Basketball Coach Shelby Met calf. The Aggies enter the game fresh from wins in their first two outings, while Houston has dropped two close ones to San Francisco and Brigham Young. A&M’s victories are over Trinity and Southwest Texas State. The Cougars are well equipped with height, listing two men on their roster at 6-8, two at 6-6 and four at 6-5. By comparison the Ags have John Beasley at 6-9, Randy Matson at 6-6 ^ Sonny Fethkenher at 6-6 and Tim Tim merman at 6-7. The Cougar attack is largely built around co-captains Rich Apolskis and Joe H a m o o d, Wayne Ballard and two junior college transfers. Apolskis is a 6-4, 215-pound senior forward that is noted for great speed with the ball and averaged 10 points per game last year. Hamood is another senior, a 5-11 195-pound guard that made the Basketball Writers all- NCAA district 6 team last year as well as the Dallas News All- Texas collegiate team. Ballard started at forward last year where he was the fastest shot on the squad and finished second in team scoring. Thurs day he will be at guard. He is a 6-2 senior. The junior college transfers that will play a big part in Houston’s basketball fortunes are Robert Hayward and Don Kruse. Hayward came from Tyler where he averaged 25 points and 15 re bounds a game as a sophomore. He’s 6-6, 215. Kruse, who may not play due to a leg injury, was a JC All-America last season at Kilgore, averaging 29.9 points and 18.9 rebounds a game. He’s 6-8, 235. The Aggie fortunes will likely depend on whether or not the first string jells and the improve ment of depth. Matson and Beasley head the starters, with Eddie Dominguez, Dick Rector and Dick Stringfel- low rounding out the first five. Beasley has hit 32 points in each of the first two games, and Dominguez, second in team scor ing with 23, has finished in dou ble figures on both occasions. Matson leads the team in re bounds with 18 against Trinity and 15 against Southwest Texas. Sonny Fethkenher, Jimmie Lenox and Tim Timmerman hold the key to the depth picture. SWC Winter Conference Highlights A&M Question DALLAS <AP) — Bigwigs of the Southwest Conference open their annual winter meeting here Thursday, with the paramount topic encompassing what A&M did with its 70 scholarship ath letes who quit the football squad. An investigation was made by the conference’s agency to see if there was a violation of NCAA rules that forbid a boy being taken off scholarship whether he participates or not, unless it is for academic or disciplinary rea sons. Coach Gene Stallings admits the boys quit but he says it was “absolutely on their own” and that they were encouraged to stay on the squad and stay in school. But when they declined. Army Explains Namath Decision WASHINGTON <A>> — The Army concedes “it may seem il logical” that quarterback Joe Na math, whom the New York Jets signed to a $400,00 professional football contract, should be found unfit for military service. But, says the Army, as a pro football player Namath has doc tors and trainers close by at every game and practice. “In the military service, these conditions would not necessarily be present,” the Army says. their scholarshi|ps were taken away. “And not one boy who quit came and asked me to be kept on scholarship,” said Stallings. Colts Put Unitas On Reserve List BALTIMORE UP) — The Bal timore Colts made it official Wednesday that injured quarter back John Unitas will not play any more this National Football League season or in the title game. They put him on the re serve list. Unitas already had been elim inated from playing against the Green Bay Packers Sunday or at Los Angeles the following Sat urday when the Colts wind up their regular schedule. Wednes day’s action removes any pos sibility of him appearing in the title playoff, if the Colts make it. The Colts are one-half game in the lead of the Western Con ference and can clinch the title by beating Green Bay. Unitas himself told The Asso ciated Press Monday “I’m out” of the championship playoff. Torn ligaments in his knee were repaired and a cartilage removed after Unitas was injured in the Colts 13-0 loss to the Chicago Bears last Sunday. Stallings said it was not fair for a boy to quit the first day and get the same scholarship as a boy who stayed out all through spring practice, fall practice and the full schedule of games. Coaches and athletic directors meet at 9 a.m. Thursday. The athletic directors, busi ness managers and coaches meet Friday morning. The faculty committee, governing body of the conference that will have to act on the A&M investigation, opens its session Friday afternoon. The faculty men will be in ses sion Friday night also and will meet again Saturday morning to wind up their business and an nounce their actions to the press. Green Bay Denies Signing McLean Officials of the National Foot ball League’s Green Bay Packers denied Wednesday they had sign ed Aggie split end Ken “Dude” McLean. Reliable sources had previously disclosed the A&M star had sign ed with both the Packers and the Buffalo Bills of the American Football League with the Pack ers aware of the previous com mitment to Buffalo when they signed him. The Packers denied the signing or any knowledge of it.
