Dr. Horace R. Byers, dean of
the College of Geosciences, has
been elected second vice presi
dent of the Gulf Universities Re
search Corporation.
Byers was elected at a meeting
this week of the corporation in
Austin.
Gulf Universities Research
Corporation is an organization of
universities and institutes dedi
cated to research of all types in
or on the Gulf of Mexico.
Other new officers include Dr.
G. E. Murray of Louisiana State
University, president; Dr. Archie
Straiton of University of Texas,
first vice president; Dr. E. H.
Mann, Miami University, third
vice president, and R. S. Wood
bury, Southwest Research Insti
tute, San Antonio, secretary.
Anderson Attending
Education Meeting
Dr. John Q. Anderson, English
Department head, is among 25
Texans chosen to participate in
a conference on education today
and Friday at Richmond, Va.
Four hundred representatives
will attend the ’ conference spon
sored by the Southern Associa
tion of Colleges and Schools.
Hackney Authors
Welding Article
B.M. Hackney, a teacher train
er for the Engineering Extension
Service, is the author of an arti
cle in the November issue of In
dustrial Arts and Vocational Ed
ucation.
“Speeding Up Welding In
struction” is the title of Hack
ney’s article in the technical pub
lication.
Hackney tells how a Houston
high school welding instructor
speeded up instruction by build
ing a portable three - section
screen equipped with the same
type lens shade as Specified by
the Bureau of Standards for arc
welding. The device includes a
speaker system.
Entomologists Attend
New Orleans Meetings
Five staff members are at
tending a series of meetings held
in New Orleans this week by the
Entomological Society of Ameri
ca.
Attending the meetings, which
end Friday, are Dr. J. C. Gaines,
Dr. P. L. Adkisson, Dr. H. R.
Burk, John G. Thomas and M. V.
Meisch, all of the Department of
Entomology.
Gaines will present a paper en
titled “Insecticide Resistance in
Bollworm Population in Texas,”
and Dr. Adkisson will present
one on “Photo-Induction of Dia
pause in the Pink Bollworm.”
From New Orleans Dr. Gaines
will go to Atlanta, Ga., to attend
the Southern Forest Disease and
Insect Research Council, where
he will participate in discussions
on research on forest insects.
Pan-Am Program
Scheduled Tonight
The Pan-American Roundtable
will sponsor a program featuring
wives of A&M Latin American
students at 7:30 p.m. Thursday
in the A&M Consolidated High
School auditorium.
No admission will be charged,
and the public has been invited
to attend.
