Corsicana, Travis Meet Friday
The Southwest Football Offi
cial’s Association had an eatin’
meetin’ Wednesday night and
had as their main speaker Aggie
Assistant Coach Elmer Smith.
Introducing Smith was Barney
Welch, who had the following
tale to relate about his own offi
ciating days in Arkansas:
It seems he was a kind of free
lance referee, and was to offi
ciate at a high school game be
tween Conway and Morrilton.
When the two teams came out for
the second half, Conway, who
was to kick off, lined up with the
ball only a few yards from the
sideline. The kicker approached
the pigskin, but before he put his
foot into it, the boy holding stood
up and threw the ball complete
ly out of the park.
Before anyone could figure out
what was happening, the lad pro
duced another ball, placed it on
the tee, and the kicker booted it
deep into the opponent’s terri
tory. So dazed were the Morril
ton players that when the oval
rolled dead on their seven yard
line, a Conway gridder was cov
ering it ... as he had in prac
tice all week!
Welch said he wasn’t sure what
to call, but he knew something
was wrong. There was no rule
in the book, except one the Con
way coach pointed to that said
the half doesn’t start until the
ball had been kicked off. The
first ball hadn’t been, so the half
didn’t actually start until the sec
ond one was kicked. Being in
doubt, Welch made what all good
refs are called upon so often to
decide: a judgement call. He
solved the situation by penalizing
Conway 15 yards for unsports
manlike conduct and proceeded
with the game. The coach later
told him he had lost the game
for them because he had com
pletely demoralized the Conway
team.
Some days ingenuity just does
not pay!
Didja ever notice when the
cookie-pusher schools win they
stand around throwing their hel-
ments in the air and all that
noise ? When the Aggies win,
they just run off the field like
its just another game, not stand
around and raise hell like beat
ing TU is something they do
once every ten years!
The TU game thus far isn’t a
sellout. The A&M ticket office
had almost sold out weeks ago
but the Sips sent back about l r
500 tickets they couldn’t turn. Is

this indicative of ‘TU Spirit’
when they don’t have a perfect
record ?
A note from Spec Gammon
shows that Coach Jack Hurlbut
is 2-0 in scouting for the year.
He scouted Georgia Tech and
Rice and the Aggies obliged by
winning both games.
Saturday’s big game in Fayet-
ville bears mention. Will Tech
turn the trick or will they pull
their famous ‘TU Choke’ when
they face the mighty Hogs? And
what’s going to happen when
No. 1 Michigan State loses to
No. 4 Notre Dame and the Pigs,
in second spot, down No. 9 Tech?
Will the power that be over
come their pro-midwest feelings
and put the Hogs where they
now belong, or will they jump the
Irritating Irish to the top?
Fabulous Phil now has 80 punts
to his credit for the year and
still stands second in SWC stats
with a 43.5 average. David Con
way sits up top with a 44.3 mark
on a little over half Scoggin’s
production, 46 kicks.
By the way, when the big day
gets here next Thursday, the
SMC’s second and third lead
ing passers will face each other.
Heavin’ Harry meets Mushy-
passin’ Marv in the Turkey Day
finale. Ledbetter has 71 of 157 for
797 while Kristynik has complet
ed 63 of 127 for 853. But Arkan
sas’ Jon Brittenum is still the
only Quarterback in the nation
to have a popular song at the top
of the Little Rock record polls.
“Quarterbackin’ Man” is still
number one in the Ozarks.

Two of the state’s top high
school football teams battle it
out for the District 3-AAAA
title in Kyle Field Friday night
at eight.
Corsicana, rated as Texas’
number five schoolboy squad and
winner of 3-4A’s North Zone, will
meet Austin’s Travie High Reb
els, the winners of the South
Zone.
Corsicana has compiled a 10-0
record during the regular season
while the Rebels are 7-3. Des
pite the difference in previous
records, both coaches have ex
pressed a strong respect for the
potential of their opponents.
In exclusive telephone inter
views with The Battalion, Coach
Sonny Myers of Travis and Jim
Acree of Corsicana told what
they expect to develop on the
A&M turf during the contest.
Said Myers,
“I expect a real tough game.
Corsicana has a great ground
game but will pass just enough
to keep you honest. And that
Allison, (fullback Bill Allison),
must be cited as their best.”
Acree praised the Austin team,
saying,
“I really expect a tough game.
They can slip up and beat us.
Both of us are just lucky to
get this far, but now that we’ve
entered the championships, we’ve
got new life. It should be a good,
close game.”
Myers added that he expects
a large delegation to follow the
team from Austin, and said that
the school was sending nine or
ten busloads along.
He described the Rebel attack
as an air-minded one, led by the
passing combination of quarter
back Tommy Cox and split end
Orville Jansen. On the ground
the Travis rushers have been
led by fullback Randy Hitsman.
The probable starting lineup
for Travis should be Don Mar-
tine, left end, (89); Dean Mc-
New, left tackle (72); Larry
Dippcey, left guard, (65); Jerry
Cryer, center, (50) ; Mackie Crow,
right guard, (62); Earl Cardy,
right tackle, (60), Jansen, split
end, (80); Jess McAngus, wing-
back, (22); Bobby Miller, full
back, (33); Hitsman, fullback,
(40), and Cox, quarterback, (15).
Corsicana’s main weapon dur
ing its undefeated campaign has
been its ground game, and this
has been lead by Allison, the
fullback.
The North Zone winners’ line
up will probably be:
Gary ScUtt, left end, (37); Don
Roberts, left tackle, (48); Ron
nie Ward, left guard, (41); Ron
nie Ragsdale, center, (51); Jim
Tillans, right guard, (38); Phil
Tillans, right tackle, (45); Wil
lard Simmons, right end, (36);
Ben Smith, wingback, (31); Al
lison, fullback, (32); Steve Winn,
flankerback, (21), and Mike Ne-
kuza, quaterback, (25).

Says Officials
‘Improving’
Elmer Smith told the College
Station chapter of the Southwest
Football Official’s Association of
the improvements in officiating
over the last few years and gave
them his views on calling a game
Wednesday night in the A&M
Consolidated cafeteria.
The group and their invited
guests, the area coaches and
school administrators, had just
finished a bar-b-que dinner when
the Aggie Assistant Head Coach
gave his speech. He was intro
duced by former A&M grid star
Barney Welch, now a college sta
tion insurance salesman.
There was more to Texas
A&M’s first touchdown against
Rice last Saturday when the fact
that Eddie McKaughan passed
to Jim Stabler for a 32-yard
scoring play.
Stabler, an alert-eyed senior
halfback from Dallas, noticed
what appeared to be a defect in
R i c e’s defense and suggested
that he might be able to get be
hind the secondary. Coach Gene
Stallings sent him in for a try
at it and it worked.
Stabler caught the pass at
about the Rice ? ? and made a
couple of dandy moves to evade
tacklers and went into the end
zone standing up.
“Eddie threw a perfect pass
and I just concentrated on catch
ing it. I stopped and two tacklers
sailed past me and I just got
around the third,” Jim explained.
Coaching passes is nothing
new to Stabler even though he’s
been known as a running back
most of the time at A&M. Dur
ing his junior year at Dallas
Hillcrest he was the primary
target on what was a passing
team. Then, his senior year, Hill-
crest was a running team and
Stabler was the top runner. He
also was an aerial threat on the
run-pass option, tossing two TD
passes. Just to prove his versa
tility, he punted for a 38.7 aver
age.
Jim has passed a few times at
A&M (he’s 2 for 2 this year) but
hasn’t done any punting. “We
first had Jim Keller and then
Phil Scoggin as punters since
I’ve been here and that’s a pret
ty good pair of kickers.”
When Stabler finished at Hill-
crest, he had SWC football of
fers from TCU, SMU, Texas Tech
and the Aggies. “I picked A&M
because it had a real fine ath
letic program, excellent facilities
for athletes and because I knew
it was a school where I could
get a good education.”
Stabler will get his degree next
spring with a major in finance.
His immediate future isn’t set,
however. “I may enter law school
or I may go into the Navy’s of
ficer candidate school. I just
don't know right now.”
JIM STABLER
Jim sought a contract to be
come an Air Force pilot after
his sophomore year here but he
couldn’t pass the eye exam.
