Schneider ‘Home’
At Fullback Slot
One day last August, in Traf-
ford, Pa., young Dan Schneider
received a telegram, from A&M
football coach Gene Stallings
telling him to begin familiarizing
himself with the fullback assign
ments in the A&M play book.
“I was happy to get that tele
gram,” Schneider recalls. “I had
played fullback in high school
and I felt more at home there.
I’ll admit I was kinda lost at
wingback during spring training.
I’d always hoped they’d move me
to fullback and I already knew
the plays when the telegram ar
rived.”
The telegram was prompted by
the news that Ronnie Lindsey
had fractured a small bone in his
foot.
Schneider proved quickly that
he was more at home at fullback
than wingback in early fall
drills. He established himself as
the starter in the second game
of the year, against Georgia
Tech, and has withstood all chal
lenges thus far.
The 19-year-old sophomore,
who stands 5-11 and weighs 198,
received two major college foot
ball offers—from Purdue and
A&M—and numerous bids from
small colleges, after he finished
at Trafford High. “I was more
impressed by Texas A&M when
I visited the campus and I just
liked coach Jack O’Brien more
than any of the other recruiters.
I’m glad now that I picked A&M
as my school.”
At Trafford, a city of about
5,000 population, Schneider was a
regular three years. He was a
halfback his sophomore year and
played fullback his last two sea
sons.
Schneider, who worked at a
gas station back home last sum
mer, says he prepared for this
season more than for any pre
vious football campaign. “I ran
and worked out every opportuni
ty I had.”
Coach Stallings told touring
writers in early September that
the most improved player on the
squad was Schneider. “He has
been a very pleasant surprise
this fall.”
The fractured foot was a bad
break, indeed, for Ronnie Lind
sey, but it also was a good break
for Dan Schneider. It provided
the chance for him to “move
back home’ as a fullback.
DODGIN’ DAN THE YARDAGE MAN
Fullback Dan Schneider (40) finds a little 213 yards on 57 carries for a 3.7 average,
running room against Rice Saturday as the His longest rush this campaign was for 18
Aggie line opens a hole for him. He is yards and he has added two kickoff returns
second among A&M rushers this season with to his list of carries for 19 more yards.
