C. Greer, Texas State Highway Engineer, has outlined an initial plan of com pliance with the recently-enacted Federal Highway Beautification Act. The act, as approved by the Congress and signed into law by President Johnson, envisions control of billboards and junk yards and scenic enhancement along the n a t i o n’s federal-aid highway systems. In Texas this will include the 3,027 miles of the Interstate highway system and 14,562 miles of the primary system, or a to tal of 17,589 miles. The Texas Highway Commis sion now has directed that initial action be taken by the Texas Highway Department to comply with the intent and purposes of the act. Greer explained these steps as follows: (1) A complete inventory of the outdoor advertising signs, displays and devices presently in place within 660 feet of the near est edge of the right of way and visible from the main travelway of the highways. (2) A similar inventory of junkyards leading to their re moval or screening under the act. (3) An expanded program of work on highway landscaping and scenic enhancement, totalling approximately $10 million. Information obtained by the two inventories, Greer said, will be used in studies that will be made relative to possible state legislation to implement the pro vision of the act, including zon ing of industrial and commercial areas along the State highway system. He added, however, that some of the junkyards adjacent to In terstate ‘and Primary highways can be screened by plantings, fences and other means. The Texas Highway Depart ment is already taking steps to form an expanded program on landscaping and scenic enhance- men. Its estimated cost is about $10 million. — Job Calls MONDAY Central Power and Light Com pany — electrical engineering Federal Pacific Electric Com pany — electrical engineering, mechanical engineering Neches Butane Products Com pany — chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical en gineering, mechanical engineer ing.
