HONEYCUTT MILITARY SECTION EDITOR pher noted Thursday at Texas A&M. Lcdr. Don Walsh, USN, co holder of the world record for deepest ocean dive, spoke to the Southwestern Electric Metermen’s Association. “Texas could easily become the Gulf Coast center for ocean sciences and technology,” Walsh commented. “Since 99 per cent of I all world trade is carried by ships, it is a simple deduction that bet ter port facilities will boost trade.” Walsh emphasized the import ance of the future Trinity River Ship Channel to Dallas and Fort Worth. “Dallas or Fort Worth will be important entry points for the Midwest and Southwest,” he said. “It will be more economical for industries in this area to have cargo shipped from Europe to Dallas or Fort Worth, than to have it shipped to California and moved overland by other means.” The lieutenant commander, working toward a master’s degree in oceanography at A&M, pointed out interest is increasing in the Houston area as a potential oceanography center. The Ameri can Society for Oceanography in Houston, he said, was brought about by space age industries in terested in entering the inner- space field.
