RATLIFF The roundballers start practice in the Southwest Conference Fri- day and there’s a dramatic story brewing. Norman Reuther, whose failure to pass sufficient work lost the championship for Texas Tech last winter, is returning and his pres ence might bring Tech the title it couldn’t win without him. Now Texas Tech will be the favorite instead of Southern Methodist. Tech will have seven lettermen, including Dub Malaise, one of the best in the nation. It also will have Bob Glover, the heralded Dallas schoolboy star who was scholastically ineligible for a year. Southern Methodist is going to have a fine team and Coach Doc Hayes says if he can come up with a good fifth man to go with his established starters — Carroll Hooser, Bob Begert, Denny Hol man and Charley Beasley — he might well win the championship. Probably his main hope is a 6-{ sophomore named John Higgin botham to be the fifth man on his team. A&M has John Beasley, the 6-8 star considered the best player in the conference, and Randy Matson, the 6-6% shot put cham pion. The recent addition of Mat- son has moved the Aggies up about three notches in pre-season polls. Most Coach Shelby Met calf has to worry about is a floor man, somebody to get the ball to Beasley. Baylor could be the dark horse with Darrell Hardy, the sensa tional sophomore of last season, to lead the way. Baylor also has a boy up from the freshmen- Jimmy Turner — who’s quite a playmaker. And there is a junior college transfer from California, Jerry Evans, 6-7, who averaged 12 rebounds per game along with 18 points last season. Texas Christian, which won on ly three conference games but lost five in the last 30 seconds, has almost everybody back, head ed by Gary Turner, who flipped in 482 points. Mickey McCarty, a 6-5 youngster up f r o m the freshmen, could make the team despite all of the veteran strength. Texas lost John Paul Fultz and Larry Franks, both mighty good men, but the Longhorns still look tough what with Mike Gammon, Mickey and Minton White a: sophomores Gary Overbeck and Billy Arnold, and a transfer from Lon Morris College, Noel Stout, who was a teammate of Bob Glo ver at Dallas Jefferson High School. Arkansas has everybody back,! except Jim Kissee and should be i improved but not quite up to making a run for the title be cause of a lack of height, Rice, which won only one con ference game, is bound to be im-1 proved because it will have about a dozen returnees, including a fine player indeed in Doug Me- Kendrick. He scored 460 points last year. In sei victory will tak Frogs h Saturda; of the ( near se The . fresh f Houston trying t defeat has a 2- are 1-3.
