Page 10 College Station, Texas JOHN NILSON John Nilson Adds Spark To Defense Sometimes the Texas Aggies are referred to as the Fightin’ Farmers. That could be a literal description of senior tackle John Nilson. Nilson, a 6-3, 220-pounder from El Campo, is a fierce battler in the Aggie defensive line and he plans to be a farmer once he’s completed his work at A&M. Nilson came to Aggieland “be cause I always liked the Aggies.” His father, who died when John was in the fifth grade, was a graduate of the University of Texas, and A&lM! didn’t offer John a scholarship. “I had a one-year offer from Texas Tech and Oklahoma State wanted me to come up there,” John says. “But, I had 60 acres in rice and made enough to pay my way to A&M.” Nilson was out for the fresh man football team and played about two downs all season. At the end of spring practice he was still on the bottom of the list. But, amazingly, he was a starting tackle for the Aggies the following fall when they opened against LSU. “I worked on the farm all sum mer and hauled hay the last three weeks and I came back for my sophomore year in good shape,” he explains. Then he adds, “but I’m in better physical condition now than at any time in my life.” Nilson was a two-way per former as a sophomore, an of fensive specialist as a junior and now is a defensive specialist as a senior. “I’d rather play both ways, but if I have to specialize, I’ll take defense.” A&M’s early-season defensive showings are the results of a number of things, Nilson thinks. “We’ve got good coaching, we’re in good physical condition and the defensive unit has a lot of pride.” Nilson played three seasons at El Campo High but the team never won a district title al though it won at least seven games each of his three years. He was an all-district performer his senior year. He is an entomology major at A&M and that will come in handy down on the farm. It even helps now, as the foes’ defensive ef forts hardly even bug Nilson. A&M Hosts Coogs In Cross Country A&M’s cross country track team will host the University of Houston here Friday at 3:30 p.m. Coach Charles Thomas’ team re turns home after a victory over Baylor at Waco last Friday. In a sport where the lowest score wins, the Aggies took the con test 23 to 35.
