It’s doubtful that any college oach meets with the press more than Texas A&M's Gene Stall ings. He holds short press confer- nces each afternoon following ractice, bringing the news nedia up to date on squad prog- m, and will hold a weekly news onference at 1:30 p.m. on Tues- ays in the Lettermen’s Lounge ocated on the ground floor of G. tollie White Coliseum. First of he Tuesday sessions is scheduled or next week. . . . A&M awards no special gear or “hitters” such as colored hel- nets, badges, etc., but wearing a naroon jersey in practice signi- ies first-team status. “That ma- oon jersey means a lot,” says lefensive end Jerry Kachtik of Kio Hondo, “because when you war one you know you’ve earned t. You get what you deserve from our coaches.” . . . Sopho- nores Harry Ledbetter of Breck- nridge, who’ll start at quarter- iack against LSU, is a mature, loised youngster. He’s married ind has two small daughters. . . . Tackle Jack Pybum says Ark- nsas’ defensive line was the ardest to block last season sim- >ly “because they were the quick- st.” Then he adds, “We’re gonna e a lot quicker this year, too.” |i Dude McLean, starting split nd for the Aggies played in the ame backfield with Texas Tech’s )onnie Anderson at Stinnett ligh. They won the state cham- lionship. . . . Tom Hurrah isn’t the first of lis family to play guard for the Iggies. His uncle, W. E. (Cap) rfurrah, was an all-SWC guard NOTES Academics Netted Biggest Gridder and QUOTES at A&M in 1919 and 1920. . . . Phil Scoggin, punting specialist from Denison, played one year of junior college football for Murray Aggies at Tishomingo, Okla., where he was a lineback er. .. . The Aggies will be well repre sented at the pre-game coin toss in Baton Rouge Saturday night. Coach Stallings has named all seniors on the starting offensive and defensive units to serve as game captains in the 1965 open er .. . Basketballer John Reyn olds of Possum Walk, Tex., isn’t the only newcomer to A&M foot ball this year. SWC 440-yard dash record holder Ted Nelson is a candidate for split end. The Andrews, Tex., senior gives the position great speed and will force foes into double coverage most of the time. . . . Starting tackle John Nilson of El Campo and Pyburn really earned their scholarships at A&M. Nilson arrived without a scholarship and Pyburn, of Shreveport, had a one - year, make-good pact. . . . Asked if there had been any temper dis plays during practice this year, linebacker Joe Wellborn of Tom- ball told writers, “Oh, there have been some flare-ups but every one was too tired to fight.” . . . On moving Eddie McKaughan to defensive halfback, Coach Stallings said, “Ledbetter and McKaughan are two of our better athletes and we didn’t want eith er to be sitting on the bench.” . . . McKaughan still is the No. 2 of fensive quarterback. Texas A&M’s excellent academic reputation provided the Aggies with their largest football player on the 1965 varsity squad. He is Jack Pyburn, a six-foot, six-inch, 225-pounder, from Byrd High in Shreveport, La. He’ll be at an offensive tackle post Sat urday night when the Aggies kick off the 1965 season against the LSU Tigers in Baton Rouge. Why did Pybum pick Texas A&M? “Purely academic,” is his two- word explanation. “I wanted to become an archi tect and A&M had a good archi tectural school. And, you know, it has become bigger and better since I arrived.” How did he, a Louisiana schoolboy, get away from the LSU Tigers? “Well, LSU didn’t offer me a football scholarship,” he explains. “They did offer a one-year track scholarship and Tulane offered a four-year track scholarship.” Pybum says he wasn’t any thing special as a high school football player. “I didn’t make the first team until I was a sen ior.” But, his team went to the state finals his senior year, post ing a 10-2 record along the way. His size was a hindrance when he wanted to start football in the seventh grade. But, in track, he set a state record with the discus and was better known for that than as a football tackle. He quickly had that “one-year, THE BATTALION Thursday, September 16, 1965 College Station, Texas Page 7 make-good” pact changed at A&M by playing first team tackle on the 1963 Fish team that won the SWC frosh title with a 4-1 record.
