Scholarships, Campus Jobs, Loans Help Aggies Through School
About 1 Of 8 Ags
Receive Some Aid;
1,600 Work Here
Despite rising cost of higher
education, “poor boys” can still
make the grade at Texas A&M.
Scholarships and part-time em
ployment are available to help
pay the way. The ratio of scholar
ships is about 1 of 8, and the
ratio of part-time employment is
even higher.
Last year A&M gave 891
awards totaling $963,560 in form
of scholarships, fellowships and
grants in aid. Scholarships range
from $50 to $4,800 per year.
Robert M. Logan, assistant di
rector of placement and student
aid, noted that students work in a
variety of jobs, such as library
clerk, laboratory assistant, farm
helper, cafeteria waiter and build
ing and grounds maintenance as
sistant. They earn $35 to $40 a
month.
Opportunity award scholar
ships, based on financial need as
well as academic achievement,
give students preference in cam
pus job opportunities.
Logan estimated $2 million an
nually is spent each year toward
scholarships and part-time em
ployment at A&M. He estimated
1,300 students worked part-time
on campus last year. About 300
worked off campus.
In addition, students are also
eligible for loans at up to six per
cent interest. A&M made $375,324
in loans to 5,363 students last
year.
Employment is also available
both on and off campus for stu
dent wives. Personnel Director
Clark Munroe said at least 1,000
student wives work on campus.
Salaries average approximately
$235 per month, he estimated.
Munroe said a higher percent
age of student wives work at
A&M than at any other univer
sity in Texas.
He estimated that approxi
mately 200 student wives work in
Bryan-College Station.
“An Aggie wife could best pre
pare herself for employment here
by becoming a highly proficient
typist with well-developed secre
tarial skills,” Munroe said.
