BOWLING: Sponsors A&M’s only official bowling team. The Bowling Committee promotes bowling tournaments among A&M stu dents and other colleges and universities. Students interested in learning to bowl, or in joining the MSC A&M Bowling Team, should become a member of this committee. BRIDGE: The MSC student Bridge Committee convenes once a week to play bridge and to discuss plays and hands. Beginners are always welcome. Several illustrated lectures and demonstra tions are planned. Participation in national Inter-Collegiate Bridge Tournament, sponsored by the National Association of College Unions, attracting players from more than a hun dred colleges, is the highlight of the year. BROWSING LIBRARY: The Browsing Library Committee selects all periodicals and books placed in the MSC library, and determines policy for its use. The committee also arranges for personal appearances of various Texas authors at the MSC through the year. CAMERA: Amateur photographers will be interested in the Camera Com mittee, with its fully equipped darkrooms. Through the year, outstanding photography exhibits are brought to the Center. Photography contests and instruction are available. CONTEMPORARY ARTS: The Contemporary Arts Committee organizes and plans all art exhibits held in the MSC. Through the year the committee sponsors several prominent artists in a program demonstra ting their style and techniques. DANCE: The Dance Committee sponsors one of the most popular activi ties at Texas A&M—dance classes, with instruction in all types of ballroom dancing. The committee also sponsors the many MSC dances, some after football games, others on weekends, and the famous Aggie version of a French night club—“Cafe Rue Pinalle”. FLYING KADETS: This committee was organized for all students on the campus interested in flying. Members who do not fly, but who are interested in aeronautics, are welcomed. Each year the Fly ing Kadets participate in regional and national flying contests. In committee meetings, the latest developments in flying are discussed. The committee purchases flying time at a discount for mefhbers. GREAT ISSUES: The presentation of nationally and internationally known speakers who provide information on world-wide topics of interest, and promote intelligent discussions relative to these topics, is the primary function of this committee. Great Is sues members select, invite, and entertain each of the promi nent speakers presented. The presentations are open to all students who have paid their student activity fee. LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE: Each year the MSC Council and Directorate sponsor the An nual A&M Student Leadership Conference. Student leaders from all major campus organizations, including the Student Senate, Corps of Cadets, Civilian Student Council, YMCA, Student Publications, Yell Leaders, Class Officers, and others are invited to join the MSC leaders in the Conference. Also student leaders from other campuses are invited to partici pate. Not only do the student leaders learn techniques of leadership, organization, managing, and parlimentary pro cedures, but fellowship and recreation provides an opportunity for the students to meet many of the college administration, faculty, and staff. PUBLIC RELATIONS: The various activities sponsored by the MSC Directorate are publicized by this committee. Through radio and newspaper advertisement and writings, the members of the committee bring to the attention of the student body and community the facilities and activities available in the Center. The commit tee also publishes a Student Center newsletter. PAN AMERICAN: The Pan American Week Committee works toward better un derstanding through knowledge of the Americas by presenting panel discussions, speakers, and exhibits from each country. A special Pan American Dance and Smorgasbord is given dur ing the Pan American Week. All students are invited to join these exciting activities. RADIO: The Radio Committee is comprised of “ham” operators and other students interested in amateur radio. In the radio club house you can work with the shortwave sets or discuss with your colleagues the latest amateur rig. SINGING CADETS: Membership in the widely known A&M Glee Club is open to students who enjoy vocal music. Appointments are made after auditions are held during the first two weeks of the fall semes ter. The Singing Cadets furnish music for numerous campus programs and travel to many major cities for concerts and shows. Rehearsals are held Monday through Friday from five to six p.m. in G. Rollie White Coliseum. HOW YOU CAN JOIN? If you are interested in participating in extra-curricular ac tivities, contact the Student Program Office in the MSC at any time during the year. MSC GOVERNMENT: The Memorial Student Center is governed by a Council of eight students, five faculty members, two former students, and a student representative from the Battalion, the campus newspaper. Students always hold the offices of president and vice-president of the MSC Council. The chairman of the MSC committees compose the Directorate, which plans and directs the activity program. The president and vice-presi dent of the Council also preside over the MSC Directorate. The highest honor attainable by a freshman participating in the MSC program is to be selected a Directorate Assistant. These men are appointed by the MSC Council President during the spring semester, and act as assistants to the president and vice-president for special events presented by the Center. Innumerable positions of leadership are open in the MSC stu dent program for students who begin participationg in the committee activities at an early date. The center of the college community social and recreational activities since 1950, the Memorial Student Center is the place where a student may spend his leisure hours, relaxing or participating in the many activities offered by its educational and recreational program. The MSC belongs to you, and its purpose is to help you make the most of your college life. STUDENT CONFERENCE ON NATIONAL AFFAIRS: The Student Conference on National Affairs, better known as SCONA, is held annually in December in the MSC. Attended by student representatives from more than 60 colleges and universities in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, the conference is a symposium to discuss national and internation al affairs. Eminent leaders in foreign affairs from govern ment, industry, and education, guide the discussion of the delegates. Work in this committee involves the many ar rangements necessary in presenting the conference. TALENT: The Talent Committee sponsors the Aggie Talent Show each year, selecting the best talent on compus, and the nation’s largest Intercollegiate Talen Show held each year on the Texas A&M campus. This committee maintains a list of talent prospects available to student groups and to the surrounding community. TOWN HALL: The Town Hall Committee selects and presents an array o^ nationally famous concert artist and top-flight entertainment by patronizing Town Hall over a four year period, a student can see the best in American entertainment. Admission to this outstanding series is gained by purchasing the optional student activity card. TRAVEL: The Travel Committee promotes interest in Travel and jobs in the United States and abroad. A primary interst of this group is to set up a foreign tour during the coming year. An information center will be in the MSC to provide informa tion concerning foreign jobs and travel. ADDITIONAL SERVICES: 1. The MSC Student Program Office serves in an advisory capacity to each of the four classes. 2. The Student Finance Center provides banking and book keeping services for all officially recognized student or ganizations on the campus. 3. Any student group wishing to organize into an officially recognized club or organization must obtain a petition of recognition at the Student Finance Center. 4. Graduating seniors may order announcements and invita tions from the Student Finance Center. 5. Students may purchase Season Reserved Seat Tickets for the Town Hall Series at the Student Program Office. 6. Reserved seat tickets for individual performances can be purchased at the performance only. 7.
