Patterson, Director of the Texas Agricultural Ex periment Station at A&M, has recently announced grants given to the station totaling $38,150. < The largest is $20,000 from the Foundation for Cotton Re search and Education in Mem phis, Tenn., for special studies on cotton. Patterson said the first and second installments in the amount of $10,000 have been received. Hess and Clark of Ashland, Ohio, has provided $3,450 for studies on the effects of antibi otics and other feed additives on turkey reproduction. Another Poultry research grant, $1,500, has been made available from the Texas Turkey Federation for investigation on downgrading of turkeys. $2,000 from the Whitmoyer Laboratories of Myerstown, Pa., is to be used for studies on the Use of anti-blackhead drugs in the diets of growing turkeys. A $3,000 research grant has been made available for estrus synchronization studies in live stock from the Eli Lilly and Com pany at Greenfield, Ind. Two $1,000 grants have been offered, one for research on weed control in field crops by the CIBA Corporation of New York City; the other for studies on field effectiveness of chemicals for cotton insect control. The Esso Research and Engi neering Company of Baytown has provided two grants, the first for $1,500 is to be used for studies on sorghum and cotton weed con trol in Northwest Texas; the sec ond, $850, is for research on the use of herbicides in irrigated soils. The Ortho Division of the Cali fornia Chemical Company in Florida has provided $850 for work on weed control in Texas field crops. A $750 grant is from the Un ion Carbide Corporation for in vestigations on cotton defoliation. The E. I. Du Pont de Nemours and Company of Wilmington, Del., has made $500 available to support research on weed control in cotton. ★★★ The annual Honors Convoca tion for the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine is set for 6:30 p.m. Friday in the Memorial Student Center. Dr. A. A. Lloyd Elder, pastor, announced. “The purpose of Rally Day is to educate and involve members of the congregation in the finan- e i a 1 responsibilities of the church’s ministry,” Mr. Elder said. Two basic areas of responsi bility receiving emphasis are the current operational budget and individual giving. The 1965 church budget totals $70,000. World and home mis sions projects will receive $11,- 500 of the budget. The remain ing $58,500 provides for the church’s ministry in the College Station community and at Texas A&M. Budget contributions during the first seven months of 1965 total $34,298. First Church members are urged to give one-tenth of their income to the budget. Army Duo Will Retire Two veteran members of the Army instructional unit at Texas A&M Wednesday received spe cial recognition on the eve of their retirement. Lieutenant Colonels Thomas A. Hotchkiss and Tom O. Matchin were awarded the First Oak Leaf Cluster to the Army Commenda tion Medal. Making the presen tations during ceremonies in his office was Col. D. L. Baker, pro fessor of military science. “I’m particularly going to miss these two officers,” Colonel Bak er said after presenting the awards and retirement certifi cates. Matchin and Hotchkiss retire effective Sunday. Both officers will continue their association with educational institutions. Hotchkiss is return ing to his native Richmond, Va., as commandant of a National De fense Cadet Corps unit in a high school. Matchin will join the commandants staff at New Mex ico Military Institute, which he attended. Hotchkiss’ retirement marks the close of 28 years service. He spent 22 years on active duty. The colonel holds the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman’s Badge and service ribbons in ad dition to the Army Commenda tion Medal.
