eight-week English Institute are introduced to University
of Puerto Rico professor Ralph B. Long (right) by A&M

Sixty police officials and youth
workers from Texas and other
states will participate here in the
8th annual Police and Community
Relations Institute Aug. 15-19.
Sponsored by the Engineering
Extension Service, the institute
will feature speakers from law
enforcement organizations, edu
cators, churchmen, sociologists,
newsmen and public officials.
Frank Day, professor in Mich
igan State University’s School of
Police Administration, will give
the keynote address on the insti
tute’s theme: “Community Indif
ference and the Growth of
Crime.”
Wallace D. Beasley, chief of
police training at A&M, said
Monday’s speakers will include
Dr. R. Koeninger of Texas South
ern University, and Quinn Tamm,
executive director of the Interna
tional Association of Chiefs of
Police, Washington, D.C. Koen
inger will discuss “A Social Psy
chologist Looks at the Problems,”
and Tamm’s topic will be “Law
Enforcement Takes a Look at the
Problem.”
Charles F. Pegg, chief of po
lice, East Lansing, Mich., will
speak Tuesday on “The Role of
Law Enforcement,” followed by
Paul O. Cardwell, president of
the Texas Council of Churches,
Dallas, who will cover “The Role
of Religion.”
Wednesday’s agenda includes
“The Role of Education” by
James McCrocklin, president.
Southwest Texas State Teachers
College, San Marcos, and “The
Role of Mass Media” by A. C.
Green, editorial page editor of
the Dallas Times Herald. Mayor
Hank Avery Jr. of Midland will j
speak on “The Role of the Elect
ed Officials.”
A summation of the institute
will be given Thursday by E. R.
McWilliams, director of the Na
tional Conference on Christians
and Jews, Houston.

ice; Charles Batchelor, assistant
chief of police in Dallas; Col. W.
E. Speir, assistant director of the
Texas Department of Public
Safety in Austin; Ed Mungovan,

City, Okla., former professor in
the School of Police Administra
tion, MSU; and Willie Bauer,
chief of Police in Beaumont.

Cyclotron Expert
To Discuss Trip

A Texas A&M physicist just
returned from Russia where he
lectured at the invitation of Sovi
et scientists will tell an A&M
audience of his experiences.
Dr. John A. McIntyre of the
Cyclotron Institute will speak at
8 p.m. July 22 in Room 113, Bio
logical Sciences Building.
“Many people have expressed
a jfesire to hear Dr. McIntyre tell
of his experiences,” C. M. Loyd
said in announcing the lecture as
an addition to the Summer
Science Lectures. Loyd is cam
pus coordinator for National
Science Foundation, sponsor of
the series.
“Reflections on A Scientist’s
Visit to Russia” is Dr. McIntyre’s
topic.

An oil painting, “Sanctuary of
Tufa,” has been donated for dis
play in the Memorial Student
Center.
Wallace Dreyer, former artist
for MSC Student Programs and
now an artist in residence in
Norfolk, Conn., gave the painting
to A&M folloging a two-week ex
hibit of his work in the MSC.
The native of Marlin’s paint
ing will hang near the south en
trance to the MSC Main Lounge.

Plans for 60 reserve officers
from the Navy, Army and Air
Force to attend a two-week semi
nar on electronic computers have
been announced. The seminar be
gins Aug. 30.
The Office of Naval Research
sponsors the program with Texas
A&M and Naval Reserve Re
search Company 8-3 as local
sponsors for the third year.
The seminar provides an ele
mentary descriptive approach to
electronic computer program
ming and uses. The reserve of
ficers from across the nation will
hear talks by A&M faculty and
leaders from industry and
NASA’s Manned Spacecraft Cen
ter, Houston. The officers also
will have 16 hours of workshop
and program writing at A&M’s
Data Processing Center.

The president of the nation’s
newest chapter of Gamma Sigma
Delta is Dr. R. C. Potts, assistant
director of agricultural instruc
tion at Texas A&M.
Potts was named to the post
July 1 during ceremonies in
which Texas A&M became the
28th educational institution to
establish a chapter. Interna
tional officers representing other
leading universities were on hand
for the installation.
Gamma Sigma Delta is the in
ternational honor society of agri
culture. Its purpose is to encour
age excellence in all phases of
agricultural education and re
search.

Two new instructors have
joined the Civil Defense training
staff of the Engineering Exten
sion Service.
They are Gus F. White, for
merly with the Texas Depart
ment of Health, and Lawrence D.
Fisher, recently discharged from
the Army. He has been chemical,
biological and radiological officer
at Ft. Bliss in El Paso.
White will direct the confer
ence program for public officials
and teach the new Civil Defense
Management course, while Fisher
will be a radiological monitoring
instructor and radiological de
fense officer.
