i 3 A&M Veterinarians Make Valuable Arthritis Discoveries A trio of Texas A&M veteri narians and medical researchers in Houston are quietly turning up strange and promising parallels between rheumatoid arthritis in swine and children. The object, of course, is to use arthritic pigs as laboratory test animals to increase medical ^ —i knowledge of the disease and then apply those findings to humans. Utilizing animals for experiments r is a classic routine, except in this case the results so far are almost I too good to be true. The A&M team is composed by Dr. R. W. Moore, associate pro fessor of veterinary microbiology; Dr. H. E. Redmond, professor of veterinary medicine and sur gery; and Dr. C. W. Livingston, assistant professor of veterinary microbiology, all of the College of Veterinary Medicine. As far as is known, the organ ism causing arthritis in swine was isolated at A&M by chance for the first time about three and a half years ago when the veteri narians were studying intestinal ^ CS Girl Scouts Idaho Bound Two College Station girls will I * ! be attending the Senior Girl IScout Roundup in Farragut, Idaho next week. ixture r Those going are Penny Han- Bemiu4‘ coc k> daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Inge at Bluefford Hancock of 201 Gil- XtenfiWhrist, an d Evalyn Worley, daugh- :eeps tM ter °f ^ r - an( t Mrs- W. While on the way to the en campment and on the return trip, the girls will stop at several tour ist attractions, including Glacier and Yellowstone parks. They will return on July 30, after ten days of camp. disorders in pigs. Not much at tention was paid to it at the time, and the discovery was set aside for investigation when time per mitted. The causative agent is known as a pleuro pneumonia-like or ganism (PPLO). Dr. Moore calls it a Mycoplasma, loosely classified somewhere between bacteria and the viruses. A PPLO, and there are a number of them, is the smallest free living cell known. It can live in a cell-free media, while a virus cannot. Shortly after the PPLO was isolated, arthritic troubles in swine became more severe. Dr. Moore and his colleagues began to push harder to identify the or ganism, how to culture it and how it causes arthritis in hogs. Definite lesions were noted in bone joints. About a year ago, Dr. Moore attended a scientific meeting at which Dr. W. J. Fahlberg of the Baylor College of Medicine Micro biology Department in Houston made a talk on human arthritis. o} BATTALION CLASSIFIED WANT AD RATES :0iu day 4# per word •r word each additional day Minimum charge—504 U pal hi- rd each additio mum charge- DEADLINE 4 p.m. day before publication Ciaaaified Display 904 P e r column inch each insertion FOR SALE “Wklf 15,000 BTU air Cha#M, $190.00. 8io , , 5:00 p. m. conditioner. Bjorklund, assistant Research Branch, USDA. director, Administrative Services Division, Electric Cars Are Predicted By Chem Prof In 20 years, American motor ists may be telling a service sta tion attendant, “Give me a five- minute charge and check the chlorine.” That’s the prediction of a Tex as A&M chemistry professor who is studying the possibility of electric-powered automobiles. Dr. Frederick R. Duke, Welch Professor of Chemistry, is con sidered a world authority on fused salt technology. One of his intrests is the economical production of auto batteries or “fuel cells.” Electric autos offer many ad vantages, the professor believes. Body style and shape can be modified, operation noise would be lower, pollution from exhaust would be reduced and many “gad gets” necessary for internal com bustion engines could be elimi nated. “I think petroleum companies would prefer to sell their pro ducts for petrochemicals rather than gasoline,” Duke estimated. Eddie and I love to walk the beach, watching with fascination the wild churning of the water where the ocean waves meet the strong river current. “That’s my name,” he said, when I told him the churning water was called an “eddy.” It’s more than his name. It’s a picture of his life — and every child’s. Growing up is a succession of crosscurrents. The influences of the home meet those of the school — the playmates — the community — the times. Strange, new experiences must be fitted into the child’s ever- widening world. Religious training is the surest stabilizing force in this turbulent period of growth. Strengthened by parental faith and example, a child discovers in his Church that there are values greater than whim or adventure. He realizes that his own and his family’s standards are rooted in the truths of God. And he learns with the firm rudder of faith to steer a bold course — out of the Inlet’s swirling eddies — across the sea of life. Copyright 1965 Keister Advertising Service, Inc., Strashurg, Va.
