Big Moments
I guess the biggest moment
for any manager is winning his
first pennant in the big leagues.
I put in a lot of years as a player
and never did get to play in the
World Series. But we finally made
it when I was managing the
Cleveland Indians in 1954.
We won 111 games that sea
son and it still is the record,
Casey Stengel won 103 with the
Yankees and that was only good
for second.
We had the best pitching staff
I ever saw. Early Wynn, Bob
Feller, Mike Garcia, Bob Lemon
and Art Houtteman were our
starters. And we had Don Mossi
and Ray Narleski in the bullpen.
We won it in Detroit but be
fore that we beat the Yankees a
big doubleheader that just about
clinched it. Casey had won five
straight flags and this broke
their streak.
The 1959 pennant was a big
thrill, too, because the White
Sox clinched it by beating Cleve
land, the second place team. I
had moved over to Chicago in
1956.
I remember that 1959 clincher
and the ending. Vic Power was
up with two on and hit a hot one
at Luis Aparicio who grabbed it
and completed a double play that
ended the game and clinched the
American League flag.
My biggest moment as a play
er had to be the day I broke in
to the big leagues with Brooklyn
as a regular. I had been up for a
few games in 1928 but spent the
whole 1929 season in Atlanta.
Uncle Robbie (Manager Wilbert
Robinson) held me out for a few
games in 1930 to get an idea of
the league. But he changed his
mind and decided to play me
against the New York Giants. I
don’t remember much about it
except that Wat Clark was pitch
ing. I think Bill Walker was
pitching for the Giants.
The big thing was playing
against John McGraw and his
Giants. That was something that
any ball player dreamed about
doing.
Dodders, Koufax Shutout Astros, 3-0
LOS ANGELES <A>) Sandy
Koufax pitched a three-hitter
and struck out 13-high for the
season in the majors — as the
National League — leading Los

ton 3-0 Thursday night.
The shutout, the first of the
season for Koufax, brought his
record to 4-2 and gave him eight
straight victories over Houston.
The Dodgers’ attack included
a second-inning homer by Lou
Johnson, who later left the
game after geing struck on the
