Weekend Tours
“ATHENS OF TEXAS”
Another of The Battalion’s
Weekend Tours is to the small,
almost forgotten town of Inde
pendence in Washington County,
Texas, within a 30 minute drive.
Top row, left to right, the bell
tower which is east of the oldest
Baptist Church in Texas. The
original bell is still hanging in
the tower, a gift of Nancy Lea,
mother of Sam Houston’s wife.
The last picture is the small
cemetery where Margaret Lea
Houston and her mother are
buried. Middle row, left to right,
marker that is all that remains
of the original Baylor University
for male students; remains of
building at the female depart
ment of Baylor, four columns of
the institution that was moved
to Belton to become Mary-Har-
din Baylor and with Waco Uni
versity to become Baylor Univer
sity; inside the doors, and old
cistern near other ruins. Bottom
row, plaque telling of the Fe
male Department of Baylor and
the move of the school; monu
ment in front of one of the
homes of General Sam Houston
and family; monument telling of
place of baptism of Sam Hous
ton and graves of Captain Taci
tus Thomas Clay and Dr. Sam
Houston in a deserted cemetery
northwest of old Baylor.
