Page 6 College Station, Texas Thursday, April 8, 1965 THE BATTALION Final Literary Lecture Set Columbia University associate professor William A. Owens who is the author of three novels re turns Monday to campus. He is to give the final lecture of the second annual Literary Festi val sponsored by the Department of English. Owens is to speak in the Phy sics Lecture Room at 8 p.m. Monday on “The Writing of Fic tion.” The free lecture is open to the public. Earlier in the day he will meet with the Eng lish faculty and also visit the “Creative Writing” class. The professor and novelists taught English at A&M in 1937- 47 before joining the Columbia faculty. He now serves as di rector of the summer session at Columbia. Owens’ latest novel, “Look to the River,” was published in 1963. He also has published “Fever in the Earth,” 1958, and “Walking on Borrowed Land,” 1954. OWENS His latest novel uses as its set ting the Northeast Texas area in which Owens was raised. He is a native of Blossom which is in Lamar County bordering on the Red River. Owens also is a student of folklore and uses some of this background in his novels. Among his publications is “Texas Folk Songs” published in 1950 by the Texas Folklore Society. He is the literary executor of the late Roy Bedichek, Texas na turalist. Among Owens’ interests are Texas folk music and play party games and American and folk literature. He received the BA degree in 1932 from Southern Methodist University and a year later com pleted the MA. In 1941 he re ceived the PhD from State Uni versity of Iowa.
