Cadets Club TLC,
Collide With Rice
In Bryan Saturday
Sports Editor
The Aggie diamondmen pound
ed out an 11-4 win over Texas
Lutheran Tuesday on a chilly
Thursday afternoon in Travis
Park.
A&M hosts Rice Saturday at
2 p.m. as they resume SWC
action. Ace hurler Steve Hill-
house will get the call for the
Owl clash.
The heroics were evenly bal
anced Thursday. The outstand
ing individual performance was
turned in by sophomore Mike
Arrington in his first starting
role. The second sacker rapped
four singles in six appearances
and turned in a fine defensive
game.
Sophomore Tommy Chiles
picked up the win, his second
of the year against no defeats.
The Louisiana native pitched five
innings, allowing two runs and
four hits. He cut down five Bull
dogs on strikeouts and allowed
three walks.
A&M clammed TLC pitching
for 16 hits and took advantage
of three Bulldog errors in amass
ing their final output.
The Aggies pushed across four
runs in the second inning to
break the ice. Mike McClure
singled, Ed Gardner walked and
then Chiles slapped a double to
deep right-center to drive them
both in. Singles by Arrington
and Alan Koonce combined with
a Bulldog error to produce two
more runs.
Lance Cobb put the fifth
Maroon tally on the scoreboard
with a 395-foot homer to dead
centerfield in the third inning.
Koonce got his second RBI in
the next frame with a double to
right field which drove in Arring
ton, who had singled ahead of
him. Koonce went to third on
Billy Crain’s single and then
hits, one run and struck out six.
The Cadets carried a 7-2 lead
into the fifth and quickly tacked
on three more runs. Chiles and
Arrington led off with singles.
An error and three walks fol
lowed, giving the Aggies a 10-2
bulge.
Chuck Malitz scored the final
Aggie marker in the eighth
frame. He lined a leadoff single
to left, advanced on a base hit
and a fielders choice, and scored
on a wild pitch.
The Bulldogs scored their four
runs in four different innings.
Catcher Larry Nowatney drove
in centerfielder Alex Wahardo
with the first Bulldog run in the
third frame. A walk, a wild
pitch and an error produced the
next Lutheran tally in the fourth
inning.
Third sacker Henry Krause
doubled in shortstop Newton
Grimes with the third TLC run
in the eighth round. A walk and
an Aggie error resulted in the
final Bulldog run in the ninth.
Timmins Suffers Injury
In Post - Game Incident
Paul Timmins, captain of this
year’s A&M basketball team, was
ported in fair condition Friday
after suffering a concussion and
possible hairline fracture while
umpiring a baseball game in
Brenham Thursday.
Timmins was taken to St.
Jude’s Hospital in Brenham. He
may be moved to a local hospital
sometime Friday.
The injury occurred immediate
ly after the conclusion of a game
between Blinn Junior College
and Houston St. Thomas. Tim
mins called a third strike on a
St. Thomas batter ending the
game.
The player then turned and
struck Timmins across the fore
head with his bat. As yet no
charges have been filed against
the player.
Blinn won the game, 9-6.
