Gymnast Club Represents
A&M In Area AAV Meets
By LARRY JERDEN
Sports Staff
On the A&M campus there are
numerous organizations to serve
the many varied interests of the
student body. One of the most
active of the several athletic
clubs is the A&M Gymnastics
Club.
The organization is one of the
oldest athletic clubs on campus
and since gymnastics is not a
recognized Southwest Conference
sport, it serves to represent the
university in this competition.
N. A. Ponthieux is the faculty
advisor of the group and Mike
Beaumont is the president. The
members work out as a team
from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday
and Thursday evenings and ev
ery night during the week pre
ceding a meet.
These group meetings repre
sent only a small fraction of the
individual member’s effort, since
some gymnasts work out daily or
at least every-other-day.
Each year the club takes part
in AAU-sanctioned meets
throughout the state and occa
sionally in neighboring states.
They also put on demonstrations
for groups seeking their services.
Last year the group performed
at halftime during an Aggie bas
ketball game. Their next exhibi
tion will be Feb. 23, when they
entertain the Hearne High School
students with their skills. Most
of their meets are in March and
April.
The first of these meets will
be in Houston. The novice and
junior divisions will be held Ap
ril 9 and 10, while the seniors
will perform April 23-24. Pon-
tieux said he had four boys who
should letter this year, including
three returning lettermen from
the five who lettered last year.
Letters are awarded members on
the basis of points earned in the
meets.
The team is untested in com
petition this year, but Ponthieux
did give some indication of their
chances based on past perform
ances and individual workouts.
The events scheduled for the
Houston meet are free exercise,
horizontal bars, parallel bars,
tumbling, still rings, trampoline,
sidehorse and longhorse.
Ponthieux said Mickey Batsell,
one of the returning lettermen,
should place well in the free ex
ercise and longhorse events. On

the parallel bars, the Aggies’
chances should be well managed
by Bill Farrell and Beaumont,
both returning letterman, and by
Paul Maddox, considered by Pon
thieux the most outstanding Fish
on the team.
He will be entered In the no
vice division while the others
will compete in the junior and
senior bracket. Beaumont should
also place in the horizontal bars
with Farrell and also on the still
rings. David Johnson on the side-
horse rounds out coach Pon-
thieux’s pick of club members
who should place in this meet.
The gymnastics program has
been in operation a good while
now, and Ponthieux feels the fu
ture should be bright. The con
tinuing success of the club is the
result of the hard work of its
members and sponsor.
A&M doesn’t give any finan-

SPORTS
cial aid to athletic clubs, so the
members must pay at least part
of their own way to meets and
demonstrations. Part of their
transportation costs to some of
the meets are defrayed through
funds from the Exchange Store
profits.
Ponthieux commented that,
“We don’t get to go to some
meets in Oklahoma and Louisiana
each year due to a lack of funds.”
