DAILY — CLOSED SUNDAY Page 6 THE BATTALION College Station, Texas Thursday, January 11: Chandler Namei Coach Of Year Head Aggie baseball coach Tom Chandler, destined to win his 100th game this spring, was named Dis trict 6 Coach of the Year at an awards dinner in Chicago Sunday night. Already with a sparkling past record of 73 wins and 52 losses, Chandler guided the Aggie ball club to victory 19 times last sea son over the 25-game slate. His team won the SWC Championship and a spot at Omaha last June in the College World Series. During his six years at A&M, Chandler has had only one losing season without ever placing less than third. In 1962, after leading for the majority of the season the Cadets dropped the last round to a Texas team that eventually took third in the NCAA playoffs at Omaha. Before he reached A&M, Chand ler played ball at Dallas Ads: where he graduated in 1943, J receiving his first degree fn| Baylor in 1948, he took a 1 of Educational AdministratidJ Sul Ross. Lenox Paces Fisli To Win Over Wo The Fish cagers took the lead after three minutes and never re linquished it as they won their first conference game by downing the TCU Wogs, 86-82, Tuesday night. Guard Jimmie Lenox sparked the Fish by tossing in 27 points to be come the game’s high scorer. For ward Terry Trippett was second with 21. The Fish outrebounded the Wogs, 46-42. Forward Max Mainord led the Fish in this department with 10. He was followed by Buzzy My- att with nine. The Wogs hit a fabulous 63.6 percent of their shots the second half but were unable to overcome the 16-point halftime lead that the Fish had built up. Last Tuesday saw the playing of quarterfinals with the seven league winners, A-l, B-2, A-3, Sq. 1, Sq. 6 and Sq. 17 entering the sudden death playoff. Each league winner had to play hard every game and only Sq. 1 came through their reg ular league undefeated. Quarterfinal football pairings found Sq. 6 defeating Sq. 17, 12-0, Sq. 1 edging A-3, 8-0, and B-2 thumping A-2 by a lopsided 28-0 score. A-l drew a bye into the semifinals. Class C finals will be played Thursday evening with the Allen Academy Counselors meeting Hart #2. Tuesday AAC beat Dorm 21, 6-0 and Hart eliminated the Vets on penetrations. Both games were extremely close and could have gone either way. Tuesday saw the close of Class A and C horseshoe playoffs with F-2 meeting Sq. 7 in the finals. Sq. 7 emerged the winner after a hard fought match. The match was de cided as Phil Gearing and Bob Mc Donald edged Mike Saunders and Roger Matkin by scores of 21-19, 3-21 and 21-9. Last week saw the conclusion the Class B first semester sde ule with the deciding of the t pong and Volleyball champ ships. In ping pong, D-3 down Sq. 7 as Dan Kennedy topped Fs Hopkins and David Willis bu Robert Robertson. The volleyball champions ce from Sq. 10 who managed to from behind to defeat C-Sbyscs of 15-3 and 15-9 after losing! first game, 15-12.
