Europe Trips Cheap, Fun Voyagers Say Frank Ray, chairman of the Me morial Student Center Travel Com mittee, has applied for a trip to France with the Experiment in International Living - . A third year pre-medical student from Conroe, Ray is serving his second term as chairman. He took over from his brother, James, at mid-term last year, and decided to have another crack at it this year. “The first thing students think of when you mention a trip to Europe is a real swank trip,” he commented. “We try to convince them that much can be gained culturally ort very little money.” Ray said a lot of Aggies are interested in touring Europe for $3 a day, much the same as John and George Long, a brother combo from El Dorado, Ark., did last summer. “Our aim,” Ray continued, “is to sell students on the idea that a trip to Europe is as valuable as a year of education, and . is not Americans Reach New Consensus Parsons Says Americans have reached a new moral consensus based upon plura listic, voluntary religious associa tion as a continuation of trends be gun early in our history, distin guished sociologist Talcott Parsons told an A&M University Lectures audience. More than 200 persons heard the Harvard University profes sor speak Tuesday night at the Memorial Student Center on “Re ligious Organization in American Society.” He outlined thfe historical and social processes through which America, essentially a Protestant culture until late in the last cen tury, refrained from establishing a state church and advanced the policy of voluntary association. Parallel developments arose in the Jewish faith and the Roman Ca tholic Church until now there is “genuine consensus in line with the main trend ever since our founding,” Parsons said. In answering a question, Par sons said the western world is in “a period of religious transition perhaps as profound as the early Reformation period.” Earlier Tuesday he conducted a seminar on “The Place of the Professions in American Society.” Attending both the seminar and the public lecture were guests from five area colleges and universities. He said chances of late applicants being accepted decline daily. The committee explains the pro gram available, helps students make applications, discusses fi nancing and other aspects of the programs,” he explained. “It takes a long time to get approval on applications. A stu dent has to have good grades and speak the language of the coun try he plans to visit,” he added. Ray expects about a dozen stu dents to visit Europe this summer. He said the travel committee is trying to stir up enough interest so the group can charter a plane to Europe. Programs available include the Experiment in International Liv ing, in which the student lives with a family for one month; Operation Crossroads Africa, in which students from many nations work on improvement projects and the International Student Travel Center, which aids students in find ing summer jobs abroad.
